Abstract lyrics mingle with music perfectly A.R. Kane “Americana” Warner Bros, records Mix New Order’s techno-pop sound with P.M. Dawn’s abstract lyrics and you have A.R. Kane. The band’s new release, “Ameri cana,” is sort of a greatest-hits compi lation of songs dating back to 1988. Alex Alyuli, (the A in A.R. Kane) and Rudy Tambala (the R), both were born in 1963. They went to school together and grew up together, and both knew what they liked and didn’t like. What they liked included Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix and “Reggae dub.” The jazz feel of Davis and lyri cal style of Hendrix both arc echoed in the band’s music. But in a 1988 interview, AJyuli said he couldn’t listen toanyrock ‘n’ roll—especially early rock ‘n’ roll. This band is a far cry from bc-bop. Its sound is very much like London industrial dance-club music. A monotonous baseline and amaz ing keyboard sounds are the basis for most of the group’s songs. The best song on the album is called “A Love From Outer Space.” It’s a very dance able track — kind of like New Order with a twist. The lyrics fit the music so per fectly that it’s hard to distinguish between the two. The words arc al most chanted and hidden beneath the sound of the keyboards. Alyuli and Tambala describe their sound as “dreampop.” This is a very accurate definition. A.R. Kane’s “Americana” is a must for anyone who likes to dance or is into the feel of abstract music. — Laura Ray CLASSED INtHEX FORSAKE 64 Printing ^Copying ^68 Recycling 2 Appliances 72 Rentals 3 Bicycles 74 Tanning 4 Books - 75 Tattooing 5 Clothing 76 Travel 7 Jewelry 80 Typing 6 Resumes 6 Computers -■ 2 £urnrtu"c _ NOTICES 9 Garage Sales ssssseB-as——-— 10 Mac.
