said. “But next spring we are going to
try to have a regular schedule for all
the Big Eight teams.”
Although no men’s Big Eight vol
leyball conference exists, Big Eight
volleyball clubs plan on having a
championship in April.
“One of our major goals is to gel a
varsity endorsement,” Macy said.
The Nebraska Athletic Department
budget has been tight, he said, but
team members hope to get enough
publicity and recognition to get enough
fans interested.
“We want to try to make an offi
cial proposal, hopefully after next
year,” he said.
Macy said about 100 universities
had established men’s volleyball clubs
across the country. And another 30
universities classify men’s volleyball
as a varsity sport, he said.
“The Big 10 has very well-devel
oped clubs. Ohio State and Penn State
have already developed a varsity sport,”
he said. “Those are the steps we are
trying to progress to.”
Although varsity endorsement is a
major team goal, other business must
be taken care of, Macy said.
“Our biggest goal is to be competi
tive and to win most of our matches,”
he said.
The Nebraska club has finished
29th and 30th out of 70 teams at the
National Collegiate Volleyball Club
Championships in the past two years.
“A top-10 finish would be great,”
Macy said.
But that may not be so easy, he
said, because the team faces financial
problems.
“We get approximately $1,500 from
the university,” Macy said. “That
money goes to entry fees, uniforms
and equipment.
“A lot of times, gas money comes
out of our own pockets.”
To raise money, the club plans to
produce a poster, play exhibition
matches at high schools and hold a
children’s clinic.
The next match for the 3-4 Ne
braska team is against Kansas at 7
p.m. Friday in the Lee & Helene Sapp
Recreation Center.

Sports doldrums set in
From about the middle of January
until the beginning of Comhusker
spring football drills in March, the
sports world is pretty dead, as far as
Nebraska is concerned,
t .People can follow the winter Husker
sports teams, but none can generate
the attention and pure passion that
Nebraska’s football team does from
Omaha to Scottsbluff.
Because of that fact of life, the
mind of many a Nebraskan turns to
mush when it comes to sports. A
reminder is needed now and then to
help people realize that there are indeed
other sports in the world besides the
one that is played at Memorial Sta
dium six or seven Saturdays a year.
So, with that in mind, crack open a
beer, rustle up some phlegm, scratch
yourself and take this little quiz.
No answers will be at the end. If
you don’t know the answer, well,
look it up.
After all, the sports page is your
friend.
