Alpha Chi Omega-B (5-2) From the Office of Campus Recreation Jackson Continued from Page 7 January 1989, he arrived in the middle of the season and didn’t get a full season of training. In the following two seasons, his training was interrupted by illness and a pulled muscle. It wasn’t until the 1990-91 season that he had an entire fall of practice. His recovery allowed him to fi nally run at full speed, and he showed that speed when he won the 400 meter intermediate hurdles in the Big Eight championships. “I knew I had a certain strength in me, but it’s a new experience to actu ally be able to go into a season after a full preseason of training,” Jackson said. Jackson said he planned to run well indoors in the 400 this season and then go back to the hurdles during the outdoor season to defend his Big Eight title. He also hopes to place high in both the NCAA champion ships and the Olympics. Last August Jackson was in Tokyo for the World Championships and ran his personal second-best time in the hurdles to gain pre-selection for the Canadian Olympic track team. His personal best is 49.99 seconds— 1 to 1.5 seconds away from what would qualify him for the finals in the Olym Pic§. . “I spent all this time trying to reach that level,” Jackson said. “But it always seems as if there is no way I could ever be at that level — like national champions. “My God, I could never be as good as (someone of Olympic caliber) is, but here it is now. I’m as good as the people who were there before I was and, pretty soon, hopefully, I will be even better than they are.” Madden Continued from Page 7 team as well as some of the comments Madden made about them: John Elway, quarterback for the Denver Broncos. “Elway has no place in the NFL,” Madden said. “The guy can’t take a hit. He scrambles around to avoid the rush instead of standing in the pocket and having some 300-pound defen sive tackle blindside him. If he was a real man, he’d stand in and take the punishment.” On the screen is footage of Elway scrambling around lor wnai seems like an eternity before a receiver breaks open and Elway hits him for a touch down. While the footage rolls, Mad den is livid. “This just disgusts me. He gets the snap and SCREECH! BOOM! WHAP! He makes defensive linemen slip and fall. This isn’t football, it’s dance class. Get Elway the pair of ballet slippers he deserves.” Mike Croel, linebacker for the Denver Broncos. “I was impressed with Croel early in the season,” Madden said. “But then he had to miss some games be cause of a case of the chicken pox. Chicken pox? Come on, give me a break. I know guys who have played games with broken bones, and he’s sidelined with a kids’ disease. “Come on, Mike, if you’re going to miss games, it should be to the DRIP! DRIP! DRIP! of blood from your body or the BLIP! BLIP! BLIP! of a heart monitor in the intensive care unit, not the OOHHH! and BLETCH! of chicken pox.” Rich Karlis, former kicker for the Denver Broncos. “Maybe he doesn’t play anymore, but I can never forget one incident in his career that will keep him on the . Un-Madden Team forever,” Madden said. Karlis was known lor not only being a good kicker, but for choosing to do it barefooted. “Look at this,” Madden ranted as footage ran of Karlis lining up to kick a field goal in snow y weather. “He’s got a sock on his kicking foot. Now, if he’s going to be a barefooted kicker, he can't go slipping on a sock. I don’t care if it was snow ing and the tem perature was 20 below . Instead of hearing his bare foot hitting the ball, SPLAT! all you hear is his foot slip ping into a sock. SWISH! I hope Karlis and Elway go to the same bal let school.’’-* Napolcan McCallum, running back for the Los Angeles Raiders. “I used to think McCallum had what it lakes to make the All-Madden team,” Madden said. “But he’s only good enough for the Un-Madden team now. “I mean, he used to play college ball for Navy. Heck, he should be able to kill defenders seven different ways with the training he had. And his name: Napolcan. Now that’s a football name. It just screams out bloodshed. But now look at him. He’s just a bench-warmer.” On the television screen appears a shot of McCallum standing on the sidelines. Look at him, Madden spouts. “His pants aren’t even dirty. What kind of a football player doesn’t even get grass stains on his pants. Roll around on the sidelines. GRUNT! OOOOF!” Finally, Madden named the last spot on the Un-Madden Team. The final spot went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneer fans. “These have got to be the worst fans in the league,” Madden said. “They don’t throw anything at oppos ing players, not even snowballs, that’s what football is all about: players battling the weather as fans throw snowballs at them. “Just because Tampa is in Florida isn’t an excuse. Make snowballs out of ice cubes. Or, better yet, just throw ice cubes. They’re much harder and think of the welts they could make on a player’s arms. PING! DOINK!” After the excitement of silting through Madden’s tirade and hot air,_9 I decided it would be too much to sit through the All-Madden show. I’d had more than enough of Madden and turned off the television. CLICK!
