Huskers pound Illinois behind Jennings’ 36 Nebraska women win invitational; up record to 6-2 ■ * ■ «1 From Staff Reports_ j • ‘ I Nebraska’s 75-56 win pver Illi nois on Saturday looked good enough on the scoreboard, but it was even better in the stat books. v The Cornhuskers, who shot an impressive 61.2 percent from the floor in the game, nailed nearly 77 percent of their shots in the first half. Meanwhile, a stingy Nebraska defense held the Illini to 32.8 percent shooting in the championship game of the Illinois Invitational. The Huskers upped their record to 6-2 as they captured their second tournament crown of the season in front of 527 fans in Assembly Hall. “This was really a big, big victory for us,” said Angela Beck, Nebraska women’s basketball coach. “Notonly to beat Illinois, but to pound them in their own tournament.” Junior receives Heisman Trophy NEW YORK (AP) — The Heis man Trophy is turning into the junior achievement award. On Saturday, Michigan wide re ceiver Desmond Howard became the fourth consecutive junior to win col lege football ’ s most im portan t award. Prior to the recent streak, only seven underclassmen had won the Heisman in 52 years. Barry Sanders and Andre Ware, the winners in 1988 and 1989, passed up their final year of eligibility to enter the NFL. The 1990 winner, Brigham Young quarterback Ty Dctmer, returned for his senior season and finished third in this year’s Heisman voting behind Howard and Florida State quarter back Casey Weldon. Howard, who didn’t play his first year, is on schedule to gel his degree in May, but says he plans to play another year at Michigan while at tending graduate school. That would give him a chance to become only the second player to win two Heismans, a feat accomplished by Ohio State’s Archie Griffin in 1974 75. “Education can take you further than anything in the world,” said Howard, whose victory margin was the second largest in Heisman his tory. “I’ll have a more concrete future if I concentrate on getting my Ph.D.’’ Junior Karen Jennings had a ca reer-high 36 points and team-high nine rebounds as Nebraska bounced back from Wednesday’s loss to No. 5 Iowa. — 44 This was really a big, big victory for us; not only to beat Illinois, but to pound them in their own tournament. Beck women's basketball coach -- ft - The Huskers, who shot 83.3 per cent from the free throw line, also had 18 assists, 15 steals and seven blocked shots. “We did everything picture-per fect,” Beck said. “We controlled the tempo of the game. We played great defense,” Jennings, who was the most valu i able player at Nebraska’s CableVision Classic, earned the Illinois Invita tional honor as well. Guard Meggan Yedsena also was named to the all tournament team. “Meggan wasn’t feeling well,” Beck said. “But she came back and played big time.” Yedsena had six points, six assists and five steals for the Huskers. The Huskers advanced to Satur day’s championship game with a 77 68 win Friday over Ohio University. Jennings led Nebraska with 20 points as three Huskers scored in double figures. Sara Offringa scored 16 points and Rissa Taylor pitched in 13 as Nebraska shot 47 percent from the floor. Defensively, the Huskers held Ohio to 34 percent shooting from the floor, including a nine of 35 effort in the first half The Huskers’ next game is Dec. 27 in the first round of the Pepperdine Invitational in Malibu, Calif. The tournament is part of a five-game road series over the holiday break. n S STANLEY H.
