Outreach Continued from Page 7 A total of 33 Huskcr athletes and 22 Golden Key members will go to schools speaking to students about the importance of education, academic motivation, goal-setting and overcom ing adversity. Zimmer said by putting the two groups together, it gives young people a chance to look at the athletes and at • the Golden Key members as role models. Outside linebacker Trev Alberts said the outreach program also allows the student-athlete to gain confidence and allows others to see there is more to just playing sports. “If we can get out there and show teachers and kids that we do care, then it is worthwhile,” he said. “A lot of people don’t really know what is included in our lives other than what we do on Saturdays, and basically, that’s the smallest part of our lives.” Navy ROTC NROTC can pay for your books, tuition, and educational fees plus $100 a month CONTACT LT. No, it’s not coming from Memo rial Stadium this year. Men’s gymnastics doesn’t deter mine its national champion until spring, so Francis Allen will have to wait a few more months to answer questions about how it feels to win his eighth national title. Next year when volleyball coach Terry Pettit and his team move back into the newly renovated Coliseum, there just might be a national champi onship banner to hang from the raf ters. As of late, Pettit has his team play ing as well as any in the country. Since losing three straight matches early in the season, the Cornhuskers have gone on a tear, winning 15 straight with only three matches lasting more than three games. Should Nebraska come away with one or even two wins this weekend against top-five Pacific, the Huskers have to be considered the favorite for the national championship. Since late September Nebraska has been simply dominant. Nick Hytrek After routing a then higher-ranked Texas team on its home court, Pettit said he thought Nebraska might be playing the type of volleyball that would win the national champion ship; it was just a matter of staying consistent and focused. Nebraska has been to the Final Four for the past two years now and the players are tired Qf coming back without the prize. This year’s team has shown the hunger, desire and, in most eases, the consistency it lakes to go all the way. It also has more than enough talent to win. With a front line of Cris Hall, | STANLEY H. KAPLAN M Take Kaplan Or Take Your Chances February Test Class Begins Nov,26th 216 North llth,Suite 102 Lincoln NK, (402)345-3595 Stephanie Thaler and Janet Kruse, Pettit has a three-pronged attack to terrorize opposing teams with. After Kruse went down with an ankle injury in the season opener, Thaler raised her performance to an All-American level, making up for Kruse’s absence. Since Kruse’s return to the lineup, Nebraska has lost only once, and that was Kruse’s first match back. During a four-match stretch, Kruse averaged more than 20 kills a match, including 23 in the win against Texas. It’s not just coincidence that Nebraska’s winning streak began at the same lime Kruse returned. Hall has been steady all season. Whenever there’s a big turning point in a match, it seems Hall is involved, whether it’s making an important kill or serving up a rally. The emergence of Nikki Strieker as Nebraska’s next great setter also has the Huskers looking tough. Add in Eileen Shannon, who, like Hall, always raises her play in the big matches, and Kim Tonniges, a fresh man who plays with the confidence of senior, Nebraska’s starting lineup is as solid as they come. Overall tournament experience is in Nebraska’s favor also. Thaler, Kruse, Hall and Shannon played in two Final Fours already, and Strieker in one. Nebraska also has played in two competitive non-conference tourna ments and the Big Eight tournament could be the most competitive in recent years. Just by watching this year’s team develop throughout the season, it’s obvious that this is a team on a mis sion. Thiscrcw is tired of just making it to the Final Four and they want to lake that last step. Come Dee. 21, Pettit should have a bigger smile on his face than when his team is thrashing Big Eight oppo nents. After all, he’ll have just coached his first national championship team.
