RHA to sponsor comedy show

If you find nothing funny about comedy,
you can win $25 tonight at “We Can Make You
Laugh,” a two-hour comedy show in the Ne
braska Union Centennial Ballroom.
The show will feature three comedians from
Grand Rapids, Mich,, who will take tumstrying
to make contestants laugh, according to Giles
Schildt, president of Harper Residence Hall.
“The first hour of the show will be a routine
comedy show,” he said. “The second hour will
be more game-show style.”
Contestants will be drawn randomly from a
hat by ticket-stub number, and the comedians
— Pcrvis Powell, Rex Boyd and Franko Michaels
— will do their best to make them laugh.
Schildt said the number of contestants will
depend on how much time is available. All the
contestants will receive a “Make Me Laugh”
T-shirt.
The Residence Hall Association has created
a non-alcoholic “night club” called After Hours,
which will host future events. The rooms will
be decorated in the style of a night club and
non-alcoholic drinks will be served during the
evening.
The tables will be covered with paper and
crayons will be provided for customers to show
off artistic talent, Schildt said.
Schiidt said the idea for a non-alcoholic
night club was discussed at a conference of
residence hall associations in Tempe, Ariz.
Other universities have similar night clubs and
several are permanent structures.
“Ideally, we would like to have a permanent
spot for the club, like KU, Bowling Green,” he
said.
“Make Me Laugh” is the second event for
the night club.

documentary “The Civil War” bring that
conflictalive for viewers, one of the produc
ers said.
“We simply brought the feelings and
passions that we recognized in the story,”
Ric Burns told an audience at Hastings
College on Wednesday. “Film has an emo
tional, almost physical connection with its
audience. A moment made it into the film if
it caused an emotional reaction.”
Bums worked about five years with about
20 historians to help write last year’s 11
hour documentary with Geoffrey Ward. The
series included excerpts from soldiers’ dia
ries, photographs and stories related by his
torians.
“We were scandalously, woefully igno
rant of our subject when we started,” said
Bums, discussing the project as part of
Hastings College’s artist lecture series.
“We tried to present the information as
fresh news because it was all fresh news to
us,” Bums said. “We wanted to stay in the
dark where we had started with our audience
and watch it unfold.”
The film captures a “tone of knowledge
rushing in where our ignorance had been,”
Bums said.
An estimated 14 million people watched
the scries, one of the largest audiences in
Public Broadcasting Service history.
“The Civil War” received a Peabody
Award, Christopher Award, three Cine Golden
Eagles and the People’s Choice Award for
best mini-series of 1990. It was produced by
Bums and his older brother Ken.
