Concert Continued from Page 11 His breakthrough hit “Around the Way Girl” occupied the pop charts for most of the summer, briefly crack ing the Billboard Top Ten, while his single “Mama Said Knock You Out,’ which was heavily promoted by MTV, solidified him as the rap artist with the biggest cross-over potential. Tickets for the 8 p.m. show are $16.50 at the door, $17.50 at mosi TicketMaster outlets. BE A RED CROSS VOLUNTEER American Red Cross INXS Continued from Page 12 albums of the year—even if you can dance to it. A — Michael Stock “Loveless” My Bloody Valentine Creation/Sire You’ve heard the imitations. Now listen to the original. My Bloody Valentine is respon sible for the creation of the “in-est” sound in music — the beautiful wall of guitars. Ride docs it. Chapterhouse and Curve dance to it. Lush and Moose make it pretty. But only My Bloody Valentine does it right. And their latest release, “Love less,” does it flawlessly. “Loveless” has been anxiously awaited since the release of MBV’s previous LP, “Isn’t Anything,” on Creation Records nearly four years ago. “Isn’t Anything” featured the in troduction of an all new noise in pop music. British music press called it “race car music,” because of its huge growling guitars and racing pace. Since the release of “Isn’t Any thing,” MBV’s imitators have been much busier than the original. While Ride, Lush and Chapterhouse can release four EPs and an album in just over a year, MBV has adopted a bit slower pace. Since the release of “Isn’t Any thing,” the band has only released two EPs, totaling eight songs. How ever, unlike its more prolific imita tors, everything these guys have released has been near-perfect. More is not always better. MBV’s release of their “Glider” EP last year shocked anyone bright enough to hear it, and was released in the United States shortly thereafter to similar reactions. “Soon,” the featured track from the EP, also closes the new album — in case you missed it the first time. The song’s rhythm track is unmis takably danceable, but the music is far from House. The dischordant jangle of guitar over grunge punctuates the barely discernible words of the verse and chorus. “Loveless” also includes last year’s single “To Here Knows When” from the “Tremolo” EP. “To Here Knows When” features the surreal beauty of Bilinda Buthchcr’s dreamy lyrics, whispering Cocteau esque words and pop’s. The texture of the song is unbelievably dense, with layers of guitars played over a back wards tape loop of sampled guitar feedback. The effect is unlike anything else in music. The genius of My Bloody Valen tine lies in the songwriting. Shields’ genius allows grunge, noise and feed back to be as beautiful as anything that the Kitchens of Distinction or the Cocteau Twins could create. MBV uses samples, tape loops and drum programming to create masterful melodic creations — not simplistic dance music that such electronic processing is usually used for. “Loveless” is the perfection of the art that My Bloody Valentine cre ated. — Michael Stock HI 3 Bicycles For Sale Lincoln Police Department notice of sale of unclaimed bicycles.
