Duarte Continued from Page 10 After those doors opened for Du arte, whose sound has been compared to that of Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, he began to develop as an artist. He could see his progression and was starting to make a name for himself. “What distinguishes me from the rest?” he asks. “Sure, a lot of times I sound like Stevie or Hendrix, but I like to take it a step further. I just don’t rehash or play exactly what they’ve done. I take it a step further and do my own interpretation of the music.” Duarte has been playing long enough to feel comfortable with his style, which he admits jumps around. He said he’s never played two shows that are exactly the same. That makes him happy. “Really, it’s what hits me at the time,” Duarte said. “Like Friday night you’ll see me play a slow blues, and I’ll be playing Albert King, Stevie (Ray Vaughan) style. And the next night I may want to play like Albert Collins or Guitar Slim style — real basic.” Benefit concert to feature Lincoln bands From Staff Reports The UNL chapter of Amnesty International will hold a benefit concert tonight at the Common place, 333 N. 14th St. The concert will feature Lincoln bands Mona Lisa Overdrive, the Loopholes, Slide, and the Yard Apes. Amnesty International is an organization that works to bring political prisoners to fair and prompt trials, and end torture and execu tion around the world. The UNL chapter of Amnesty International dedicates most of its time and resources to letter writ ing. “The majority of prisoners that we write letters on behalf of get released,” said Anne Komer, coor dinator of the local chapter. Komer says the postage and research associated with these let ters is costly. These costs are cov ered primarily by fundraising. “It’s really important for people to support private organizations working for human rights because governments have supposedly more important things to look after than human rights, like national secu rity.” Mona Lisa Overdrive, who played at Duffy’s Tavern Wednes day night, is a recently formed guitar-oriented, grunge troupe. The Yard Apes have also played at Duffy’s and are gaining a strong following with their funk-tinged style. Admission to the benefit con cert is $3. | CLASSIFIED INDEX ============ 63 Pregnancy PORSALe* 64 Printing & Copying ''r 68 Recycling ?
