Nebraska to try to end Top 10 slump
By John Adkisson
Staff Reporter
The Nebraska volleyball team will
The Comhuskers, ranked 10th by
the NCAA, will try to prolong their
10-match winning streak when they
play matches against Texas and
Houston at the Delta Airlines Chal
lenge in Austin, Texas.
At 17-3, Nebraska is undefeated
against Big Eight opponents. But the
Huskers are 0-3 against teams ranked
in the Top 10.
That will change if Nebraska is
able to beat the Longhorns, 15-5 and
ranked eighth.
“They’re a very good ballclub,”
Nebraska Coach Terry Pettit said.
“They’re well-coachcd, disciplined,
very similar to Nebraska. We’re proba
bly the two most similar programs in
the country.”
The two are also similar in terms
of success. Over the past five seasons,
Texas has a combined 146-35 record
and three Final Four appearances. Over
the same period, Nebraska is 148-23
with three Final Four appearances.
Pettit said the similarities between
the programs have definite reasons.
“We’re similar in the type of play
ers we recruit, in the discipline we
play with, and in terms of being pre
pared to play,” Pettit said.
Texas Coach Mick Haley said the
two programs are responsible for bring
ing non-West Coast volleyball to its
current level.
“Nebraska and Texas are sort of
the benchmarks as far as teams in
their region,” Haley said. “Every other
team lives for the day you can beat
one of those two.”
Texas A&M accomplished just that
Wednesday night. The Aggies beat
Texas in five games to snap the Long
horns’ 69-match winning streak against
Southwest Conference opponents.
Nevertheless, Haley said, his team
will be ready for Nebraska and the
Huskers’ attack of Stephanie Thater,
Janet Kruse, Cris Hall and Eileen
Shannon.
“I think I’ve seen those four big
kids for about 200 years,” Haley said.
“It’s not too difficult to figure out
what Nebraska’s going to do Satur
day.”
What Nebraska docs need to do,
Pettit said, is keep its composure and
use its depth to beat the Longhorns at
what is expected to be a nearly-packed
Recreation Sports Center.
“I think you have to have to play
more composed and more focused on
the road,” Pettit said “You can’t expect
to get breaks on the road.”
Nebraska will need to stop Long
horn outside hitter Annette Garza,
who leads Texas with 685 kills and a
3.6 kill-per-game average. Last sea
son, Garza led the Longhorns in her
team’s four-game loss to the Huskers
at the NU Coliseum.
Haley said the key will be for his
team to block and serve well.
“You have to be pretty good at the
net to beat Nebraska,” Haley said.
“And if you don’t serve tough, you
can get behind real quick.”
If Texas does fall behind, Haley
said, he and the Texas crowd have a
solution as to how to stop Nebraska.
“We’ll just all get down on the
floor and start yelling at Coach Pet
tit,” he said with a laugh.
Nebraska’s first match this week
end, tonight against Houston, must
not be overlooked, Pettit said.
“Houston is athletic. They’re not
as strong physically as Texas, but
they are certainly very good,” Pettit
said. “We’ll need to play well.”

Golfers to brave weather
By Jeff Singer
Staff Reporter
The Nebraska men’s golf team,
like the football team, may be con
tending with snow this weekend when
it travels to Beebe, Ark., to compete
in the Pepsi Indian Classic at the
Fairfield Bay golf course.
The 18-team tournament may or
may not be held by Arkansas State,
depending on the weather.
Whether there is sunshine or snow
in*Arkansas this weekend, the weather
will have already had an effect on the
Comhuskers, according to Nebraska
Coach Larry Romjuc.
“Things were looking pretty good
before this front came through Lin
coln,” Romjue said. “But now we
haven’t practiced for a week, so it’s
going to be tough on us.”
Despite the Huskcrs’ lack of prac
tice time, Romjue said, he will be
disappointed if Nebraska doesn’t have
a high finish at the tournament.
“If we can get our act together,
we’ll be able to contend for the title,”
Romjue said. “I’ll be very disappointed
if we’re not there at the end.”
The tourney will start today, with
the final round Sunday. This will be
the last competition for the Huskcrs

enough to motivate you, when you’re
going against guys that are supposed
to be the best.
Although Nebraska Coach Tom
Osborne said Nebraska’s 63-6 thrash
ing of Missouri last week was the
Huskers’ “most complete game,”
Shields said the offense hasn’t peaked.
“It’s yet to come,” Shields said.
“But when you’re steadily improving
like we have been, you know it’s
going to come.”
But it’ll have to come against a
steadily improving Colorado defense,
Osborne said. The Buffaloes arc ranked
11th in the nation (and second in the
conference) against the pass.
“I think they’ve made some
changes,” Osborne said. “They were
playing a lot of man-to-man, and got
hurt quite a bit.”
Shields said he thinks Nebraska’s
defense is improving just like Colo
rado’s defense is improving.
“We’re very confident in what (the
defensive players) can do,” Shields
said. “They came on strong last week.
And I think maybe they’re coming
into their own.”
Hughes said Nebraska would like
nothing better than to “come into
their own” and cool Colorado’s win
ning streak,
“If we keep playing the way we
have been,” Hughes said, “and keep
mixing it up offensively, I’m confi
dent that we’ll come out on top.”
