Back 'Figures' on tough game Buffalo says win equals bowl By Thomas Clouse Staff Reporter One Colorado defensive back figures the game against Nebraska has caused him to see red, and maybe orange. Deon Figures, Colorado’s starting right comerback, said the Nebraska rivalry has heated up. “It’s the only game up on our board in red letters,” Figures said. “If we beat Nebraska, it’s an other trip to the Orange Bowl.” No. 14 Colorado is 5-2 and 3-0 in the Big Eight following wins over Olda homa, Missouri and Kan sas State. The Buffaloes Figures have lost to Stanford and nationally-ranked Baylor. Last year, Colorado beat Nebraska in Lincoln 27-12 before going on to defeat Notre Dame 10-9 in the Orange Bowl to earn the Associated Press version of the national championship. The 6-foot-1,195-pound cornerback said Nebraska’s offense should pose more prob lems for Colorado’s defense than in the past. “Compared to last year, (the Comhuskers) are more balanced with the run and the pass,” Figures said. “We can’t get caught slipping.” No. 9 Nebraska is first in rushing offense and second in scoring and total offense in the nation, while the Husker passing offense is ranked 78th in the country. “First of all, we need to stop the run and force them to pass,” Figures said. “Then the game will be more in our hands.” It’s nice to play a big game at home, he said. “I think any time a team plays at home it’s an advantage,” Figures said. “It’s a well known environment, sort of like a 12th man.” Regardless of where the game is held, “we’re still going to have to play well to win,” Figures said. Both teams need to cut down on mis takes, but for Nebraska to win “they have to come in with a balanced attack,” he said. Figures said the main reason for Colo rado’s ascent from the Big Eight cellar started in 1988. “We had good success recruiting from Texas and California and a talented coach ing staff,” he said. Figures said he has no personal goals. “I believe team defense breeds personal goals,” he said. “If you play for the team, you will get noticed more than if you play for yourself.” Coach: Men swimmers strong By Thomas Clouse Staff Reporter Nebraska men’s swimming coach Cal Bentz said he thinks his team will make a strong challenge to retain its dominance in Big Eight competition. Under Bentz, Nebraska has won the past 12 Big Eight championships. Four NCAA All Americans and two 1991 NCAA Champion ships qualifiers headline a team that has a good mix of swimmers, Bentz said. “We have a lot of returning talent and a lot of tenacious younger swimmers,” he said. Bentz said the team should be strong in distance events. “At least stronger than in the past,” he said. “Also, we have several people who can swim different events.” The men’s team swam in the Great Pumpkin Classic last Saturday to establish times and experience a meet situation. “Their performance was indicative of their training,” Bentz said. “Some of the swimmers came close to their best times.” Bentz said he will look to team captains Bill Murray and Doug Garland along with NCAA All-Americans Bob Fitzpatrick, Jan Karlsson, Seddon Keyter and Jonathan Kerr to help lead the younger swimmers. The team, which was 8-2 in dual competi tion last year, will open its dual season Friday in Fort Worth, Texas, against Texas Christian. Nebraska then travels to Dallas on Saturday to take on Southern Methodist. The first meet ends seven weeks of training in which each swimmer has swum close to 275,000 yards, Bentz said. “And that’s just sprinters. The distance swimmers have swum at least a third again as far,” he said. The meet last week gave Bentz a chance to see how versatile some of the swimmers are, but the lineup still is not determined. “Our work is continuing just as planned,” Bentz said. “(Friday’s) meet is part of our active training.” Some of the team goals include continuing Nebraska’s Big Eight success and placing higher in the NCAA, he said. The Nebraska men’s team finished 32nd in the NCAA last year. Bentz said placing higher in the NCAA will be “much, much harder” because cut-off times are lower this year. Kyle Seeback and diver John Arcaroli were the only two Husker NCAA qualifiers last season. “The simple answer is to get more swim mers qualified for the NCAA championships,” Bentz said. “But the process is more narrowly defined, so it will be tougher.” Nebraska returns six Big Eight title-holders, including Arcaroli (1-meter diving), Karlsson (50 and 200 freestyle), Kerr (400 intermediate medley) and Seeback (200 butterfly). In the Big Eight, Kansas is always tough, Missouri has a new coach and Iowa State has a lot of new talent, Bentz said. “To win the conference, we’re going to have to do the work needed to be done,” he said. “It has to be a complete job.” $3 00 per day for 15 words on individual student and student organization ads. $4 00 per day for 15 words on non-student ads. $.15 each additional word $.75 billing charge Personal ads must be prepaid.
