Rivalry Continued from Page 7 points for the 27-12 win. In just eight years, what was once a sure win on the Nebraska schedule has evolved into a grudge match. Since the departure of Barry Switzer at Oklahoma, McCartney has become the object of hatred in Nebraska. But hatred is about the only thing Nebraskans have down pat in the rivalry business. Can you picture Tom Osborne leading a bunch of Nebraska stu dents in the Nebraska fight song as Colorado football paraphernalia is sent up in flames? Even the Nebraska sports infor mation department is getting burned. Last week the Colorado media relations people sent out an 86 page propaganda packet contain ing copies of newspaper clippings about this year’s Colorado football team. These stories aren’t just about Darian Hagan, Joel Steed and other names Husker fans have come to hate. There are stories about play ers nobody outside the Colorado football program would have heard of. Now we know about them, loo. Maybe this week someone will stage some sort of “Bury the Buffa loes” demonstration on campus. Have a bonfire, invite the players to throw buffalo burgers in the flames. Maybe that wacky Osborne could make a cameo appearance and say something inspiring like “Colorado’s a good football team. We’ll have to play a good ball game to beat them.” But then again, maybe nobody will do anything. Everyone will sit in front of their televisions Satur day night and cuss because Ne braska players don’t show any emotion. “Someone should do something to motivate those players,” they will say. “Why don’t our fans do some thing wild and crazy like camp outside the stadium the night be fore the game and be really loud, getting the players excited during die game?” more will ask. But, of course, none of this will happen. Nebraska fans and admin istrators are too conservative and unimaginative to come up with such ideas. Or to allow them, for that matter. The administration would view any attempt to show actual school spirit as a great way to make a few bucks, which would drive students to the bars to spend their money on penny pitchers instead of a costly pep rally. And we couldn’t have a bonfire or anything like that. That’s pretty rowdy. After what happened at the Washington game this year, we wouldn’t want anyone to have a good lime before or during the game. Aren’t big rivalries great? Hytrek is a senior news-editorial ma jor and the Daily Nebraskan sports editor. Kansas Continued from Page 7 builder,” he said. “Il was not only a physical challenge, but a mental chal lenge. We beat them in a match that they had pointed for all season.” Tonight, the Huskers will see Kansas for the second time this sea son. Earlier this month, Nebraska beat the Jayhawks 15-8, 15-13, 15-12 in Lawrence, Kan. Pettit said the Jayhawks, at 21-4 overall and 4-3 in the Big Eight, pres ent a challenge in a swing offense which uses outside hitters as setters. “It’s been very effective,” Pettit said. “We have to be alert.” The Jayhawks are led statistically by sophomore outside hitter Cyndee Kanabel and senior hitter Kris Klein schmidt. Kanabel has compiled 285 kills in 25 matches for Kansas, while Kleinschmidthasa3.1 kill-per-game average. The Huskers have won 47 con secutive matches from Kansas in a series dating back to 1975. But the Jayhawks arc having one of their best years ever under Coach Frankie Al bitz and assistant Karen Schonewise, a former Nebraska player. Pettit said Kansas has gotten itself in a position for a possible postseason berth, cither in the 32-team NCAA Tournament or the Women’s Invita tional Tournament. “They’re definitely a WIT team,” Pettit said. “And they’re an NCAA team if they win the Big Eight Tour nament.” University of Nebraska-Lincoln Campus Activities and Programs Office Rewards Your Volunteer Spirit!
