Their features form slowly — as if from the mist which enshrouds the countryside. And perhaps that is the most important feature of the film. It offers us the opportunity to bridge the gap: the frozen borderland between the characters and ourselves. There are rough passages, but the acting and dialogue are excellent overall, and the cinematography is disturbing. Eventually one has diffi culty with the creeping slowness of the trip. It seems to us, as to the children, that they will never arrive. And there is so much rain, fog and cold that the viewers themselves may begin to feel a chill. It is a miserable season for travel. One almost gets the feeling that years and years have passed without the cameras ever leaving Greece. * 10 sessions for $25 with student I.D. * Bulbs changed regularly for maximum strength * Wolff Tanning Systems * We sanitize beds for you 70th & A 489-6998 _^_ L__I The Computing Resource Center is offering a free microcomputer seminar to UNL students. They are not typical comic book heroes. They are The Endless, a group of seven siblings who are immortal per sonifications of various states of mind, the incarnations of spirits. They are characters in “The Sandman” comic book series. Cosmic Comics is holding a “Sandman* Slumber Party” at their East Park Plaza store, 200 N. 66th St, from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. tonight. The promotional event will include a sale on “Sandman” merchandise and a “Sandman” character costume con test. Although the series originated only in 1988, it is rapidly becoming a phenomenon. The first 20 issues have been packaged into three graphic novels. T-shirts and posters have been made, as well as wrist watches featur ing characters from the comic. “It sells real well,” said Larry Lorenz, owner of Trade-A-Tape/ Comic Center, 145 S. 9th St. “It has a real solid following.” Lorenz said that college students represent the biggest buying group. Though the market is mainly men, Lorenz estimated that the female portion of the buyers has grown to 10 percent. “More women read ‘Sandman’ than probably any other comic,” said Brian Schur, owner of Cosmic Comics. “It’s real accessible to either gender.” The main character in “Sandman” is Dream. His family appears in many of the issues, especially his older sis ter Death and his brother Destiny. The rest of his siblings, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Desire, also appear from time to time. “It’s so multi-textured, it transcends normal comics,” Schur said. Scries author Neil Gaiman has received of a number of awards, in cluding the 1991 Will Eisner Comics Industry Award for best writer. “Sandman” won the 1991 World Fantasy Award for best short fiction. This is not a category in which com ics are normally nominated, but the Sandman isn t a normal comic, ine more common description is “graphic literature.” Gaiman has created an interesting blend of horror and fantasy, allowing his characters to grow and experience loss, pain and anger. As in most comic series, each individual comic is a self-contained chapter in a story of greater scope. The scope is life on this human plane and the planes that surround it, heaven and hell. The characters exist in the present, but have traveled in time to ancient Greece, the time of Shakespeare, the French Revolution and events in early American history. Various forms of myth and legend are woven into the story. New characters are introduced who interact with Dream and occasionally the other members of The Endless. “It’s a comic geared to adults,” Schur said. “It doesn’t have to have nudity and sex and violence to be mature. The themes are just on a different level. “It transcends the basic comic medium of superhero genre.” $3.00 per day for 15 words on Individual student and student organization ads. $4.00 per day for 15 words on non-student ads. $.15 each additional word. $.75 billing charge.
