ous. I think I saw five or six cops
patrolling the area, and they seemed
to have their hands full.
Inside, it was a freak show: greasy
moshers with nose rings and bad
tattoos, militant street rappers tired
of waiting for PE to come to Chi
cago, and a few ancient-looking
Anthrax devotees. Those without
tickets were trying everything to try
to weasel a way in. For the women
wearing leather mini-skirts, there
was usually a way to get past secu
rity.
Most importantly, though, there
was a terrific racial mix in Chicago,
one that may have made the police
nervous, but provided the black
and white interaction that the bands
had in mind.
It was ironic that in Champaign
the Enemy’sChuck D, music’s most
critical rapper and the man most
had come to see, was booed for
criticizing the Illinois mascot — the
Illini Indian.
Anthrax and Public Enemy are
bringing more than noise on this
tour, and they will probably bring
it to a few more places where they
won’t quite be heard.
