    Shakespeare folio to tour state
Other Love books
also will make trip
By Ronda Vlasin
Staff Reporter
William Shakespeare’s 368-year
old First Folio, donated to the Univer
sity of Nebraska-Lincoln last Febru
ary, is going on tour.
The folio will be taken to Alliance,
Scottsbluff, Ogallala and North Platte
Oct. 28-31, said Kent Hendrickson,
dean of UNL libraries.
“Later we might make other trips
to other cities, but this is what is
scheduled for right now,” he said.
There are no plans to take the folio
out of Nebraska, he said.
The folio, valued at $300,000,
contains 36 of Shakespeare’s 37 plays.
Seventeen of the 36 plays appear in
print for the first time in the folio,
which was published in 1623.
It is the only existing original folio
between the Mississippi River and
the West Coast, Hendrickson said,
and was donated by Sidney Johnsen
of Lincoln in memory of her father.
“It is such an important equity of
the library and it belongs to the entire
state,” he said. “Unfortunately a large
bunch of people will never have the
chance to see it. We’d like to make
sure that they get that chance.”
Hendrickson and Robert Knoll, a
UNL English professor emeritus, will
take the folio on tour and will meet
with three or four comm unity groups,
social organizations, high schools and
public libraries.
Along with the Shakespeare folio,
a first edition book by Willa Cather, a
first edition book by Maria Sandoz
and a centennial edition of Mark
Twain’s book “Huckleberry Finn” will
go on tour, Hendrickson said.
Since the folio has been part of the
library’s permanent collection, he said,
‘it has received a lot of interest.”
It is still considered the most valu
able gift to the library, he said.
