Pettit said Nebraska will have a

Huskers will play this weekend.
“Player for player, we probably
have a size advantage over all the
teams we play,” he said. “But all of
the others are both quick and aggres

Saturday’s Concordia Invitational in
Seward.
Fletcher will join the women’s
squad of Julieanne Campbell, Kris
Ellenbeckerv Becky Lund, JoDee
Shufelt, Kerry Spires, Sylvia Veit and
Kirsten Walz. Steve Coulter, Frank

Nebraska Coach Jay Dirksen said
results of the race will be used to set
Nebraska’s lineup for the Oct 5
Minnesota Invitational.
Last weekend, the Huskers used
strong performances from David Iteffa
and All-American Fran ten Bcnsel to
sweep the Woody Grccno/Ncbraska
Invitational.
Ten Benscl’s time of 17 minutes
13.3 seconds, the second-best time
ever recorded on Nebraska’s home
course, broke her own meet record.
Iteffa, who covered the 5,000 meter
course in 24:54, had the fourth best
time in the race and the best ever by a
Nebraska runner.

Nebraska’s Lisa Graham finishes out the race at the Woody
Greeno/Nebraska Invitational last Saturday. Graham will
have the week off when the men’s and women’s teams

just once, in 1976.
But avoiding a second straight
loss won’t be easy against the 24 th
ranked Sun Devils, Lewis said.
Arizona State beat Southern Cal
32-25 Saturday.
“They’re going to be real high,
coming off a big win,’’ Lewis said.
“I’m sure they Tl start off hot, but if
we punch a couple of touchdowns
on the board, it’s going to shut
them down real fast.”
Lewis said Arizona State’s de
fense won’t be as smothering as
Washington’s.
“Last week was a little difficult
because they show you a lot of pic
tures, a lot of blitzes,” Lewis said.
“I don’t think Arizona State will do
that much, so that’ll be better for
us."
Lewis said that may mean more
jaunts up the middle than during
the Washington game.
“Washington had a smaller de
fense with an eight-man front and I
think that’s why the fullback didn’t
carry the ball much,” he said. “Ari
zona State will play more of a
seven-man front’’
Of the seven he’ll meet Satur
day, Lewis will recognize one in
particular.
“My best friend from high school
starts at linebacker,” he said. “So
that’s going to be kind of interest
tt
ing.
Arizona Slate middle linebacker
Brett Wallerstcdt, who recorded
16 tackles against Southern Cal,
played alongside Lewis at Scott
City (Kan.) High School.
“He was Pac-10 player-of-thc
week last week,” Lewis said. “He’s
a hell of a football player.”
And Lewis said that’s the way
he will treat him on the field.
“I talked to him last week and
just told him he belter get ready,”
Lewis said.
In fact, Lewis will be blocking
Wallerstedt “all night long.”
“We’re not going to be talking a
lot,” he said. “During the game it’s
all business.
“I’m here for one purpose and
that’s to get this team to win.”
Defensively, Nebraska will make
some adjustments to win Saturday.
“We may have to gamble a little
bit more to get some pressure,”
Osborne said.
Osborne said the Comhuskers
weren’t getting enough pressure
on the quarterback sitting back in
their dime defense’s zone.
“If you sit in a zone and you
have four seconds to throw it, there’s
going to be some place to throw it,”
he said.
Allhough Arizona State rushed
for 307 yards on 53 carries against
Southern Cal, Osborne said the Sun
Devils might throw more because
of Washington’s passing success
against the Huskers. The Huskies
threw for 283 yards last week.
“They don’t spread you out quite
as much (as Washington),” Osborne
said. “They may against us after
that game. They’ve got that capa
bility and they have that kind of
thrower.”
Arizona State quarterback Bret
Powers, who’s6-fool-5 and weighs
220pounds, threw for 149 yards on
seven for 14 passing against USC.
“He’s capable of throwing 40
passes and doing very well,’’
Osborne said. “They only threw it
14 times against USC, but when
they threw it, they hurt them.**
And Osborne said Arizona Stale
has momentum and confidence
going into their first home game.
“It’ll be a very tough game,”
Osborne said. “I hope it’s one that
we’ll show some improvement and
be able to win. But it’s going to be
hard.”
Tournament to be fall highlight
The Nebraska men’s tennis team
kicks off its fall season this weekend
at the Notre Dame Invitational.
The Comhuskers will be compet
ing against four of the nation’s Top
20 teams in what is considered one of
the country’s top fall tournaments.
Nebraska will be making its first-ever
visit to Notre Dame.
“This is a great incentive for our
program,” Coach Kerry McDermott
said. “This will definitely be the high
light of our fall season.”
McDermott said this weekend’s
tourney will be a good indicator on
how the team will perform the rest of
the year.
nay begins today and runs through
Sunday.
Devils

The game — Arizona State’s first
home game this season — will be
played in Sun Devil Stadium in Tcmpe,
Ariz., a site at which the Huskers
have had little luck in the past.
Nebraska is 1-4 in the stadium,
beating Arizona State 35-28 in 1987
in the only regular-season game of
the five, and has never played there at
night.
Marmie said that if the game is as
close as the 1987 contest, his team
“has an excellent chance” for an upset
win.
“Our team this season has a lot of
character and, so far, has played with
a lot of heart,” Marmie said. “If we
can keep it close, our kids know what
to do late in the game.”
Marmie said he also hopes the
home crowd will play a role.
“The crowd needs to be in this
game from start to finish,” he said. “If
not, we could be in for a long, long
night.”
I he bun Devils have opened their
season with a 2-0 record for the first
lime since 1951, with wins against
Oklahoma Stale and Southern Cal.
Arizona State’s offense is led by
quarterback Bret Powers, who has
completed 21 of 39 passes for 356
yards and two touchdowns in his first
twogames.
The Sun Devil ground game is led
by redshirt freshman tailback George
Montgomery, who shredded USCs
defense for 136 yards and two touch
downs on 22 carries during Arizona
State’s 32-25 win Saturday.
Another freshman tailback, Mario
Bates, came off the bench against
USC and gained 86 yards on seven
carries.
Arizona State’s defense is led by
sophomore outside linebacker Shante
Carver, who recorded 10 quarterback
sacks last season as a reserve. Last
weekend, Carver recorded three sacks
against the Trojans.
“Wc have a lot of youth on this
team, but we have a lot of talent, loo,”
Marmie said. “Hopefully, this season
is just the beginning. We could have
a lot of good years at Arizona State if
some of our key players develop to
potential.”
Marmie, who is in his fourth year
as Arizona State's coach, has faced
Nebraska only once before, in a 47
16 Husker romp in Memorial Sta
dium in 1988.
“That game was in my first season,
and it seems like so long ago,” Marmie
said.
