Lewis “We came back and ended up beating Arizona State bad and went on to win the Big Eight title. “And that’s our goal right now.” Nebraska beat Arizona Stale 47 16 in 1988, after losing to UCLA 41 28 the week before. The Cornhuskers will host Georgia, Maryland and Colorado in this weekend’s FirsTier Invitational at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Upset possible, but unlikely, Buff coach says By John Adkisson Staff Reporter For Brad Saindon, the scenario for an upset is almost too perfect. Saindon, the Colorado volleyball coach, is bringing his Lady Buffs and a four-match winning streak to Lin coln to play Nebraska in the FirsTier Invitational tonight. Meanwhile, the 7-3 and ninth ranked Cornhuskers have struggled lately, losing three consecutive matches for the first time in almost a decade. Despite those facts, Saindon said a Colorado upset is still unlikely. “We’ve been chasing Nebraska for the last three years,” he said. “We have some momentum, but I’m sure they’re gearing up for this tourna "U ment and will be trying to end that streak.” The tournament, which begins with a 6 p.m. match tonight, also includes Georgia and Maryland. Nebraska will play Colorado at 8 p.m. tonight, Maryland at noon Saturday, and Georgia at 8 p.m. Saturday. Nebraska Coach Terry Pettit said beating 10-4 Colorado will take no less than a top-notch effort from his Huskcrs, who have lost consecutively to UCLA, Brigham Young and New Mexico. “(Colorado) has one of their better teams,” Pettit said. “They run a swing offense and they ’re well-coached.” Last season, Nebraska finished undefeated in the Big Eight, but got its biggest test in a live-game match at Colorado. Saindon said he thinks his team is "close” to challenging the Huskers for a conference title. “Our two main goals arc to win at least a share of the conference, and to make the NCAA tournament,” Sain don said. Beating Nebraska, according to Saindon, will be more a matter of slowing down the Huskers* big guns instead of trying to stop one person. “They come at you with so many weapons,” he said. “We will be see ing them hopefully two more times this season, so we’ll also be trying to learn some things tomorrow night." Pettit said his team must try to stop the powerful hitting of Lady Buff junior Tiffany Jesladi, who already has pounded 153 kills for a .264 hil ling percentage this season. “Their best player is their right side hitler, Jestadt,” Pettit said. “She’s the set of choice.” The Colorado match will be the first home match of the season for Husker senior outside hitter Janet Kruse, who missed eight games early with an ankle injury. Pettit said his team has put last week’s losing road trip, in which the Huskers finished 0-2, behind them. “I don’t have any thoughts about it,” he said. “We’ve put that all be hind us and arc focusing our energy toward this weekend.” Maryland, the Huskers’ next op See TOURNEY on 8 ASU coach expects big NU rebound By Chuck Green Senior Editor According to Arizona State Coach Larry Marmie, Nebraska’s loss was the Sun Devils’ loss. * Marmie said lha ' ' ‘ * the 16th-ranked Comhusker football team is a difficult task anytime, it will be especially tough after Nebraska’s 36 21 loss to Washing ton on Saturday. “They’ll be pretty mad,” Marmie said. Marmie “They’re not too accustomed to los ing. It doesn’t happen very often, so when they do, they’ll be looking to come back strong and prove what they’re made of. “I just hope we’re made of enough to hang in there with them.” See DEVILS on 8 r Tournament offers peek at Big Eight By Jeff Singer Staff Reporter The Nebraska women’s tennis team will be seeing some familiar faces this weekend when it opens its season playing host to the Huskcr invita tional. Three Big Eight foes will get a glimpse of the Huskcrs in the tourna ment beginning today. ‘This tournament will show us how we match up with some of our Big Eight opponents,” Cornhusker Coach Scott Jacobson said. Colorado, Iowa State and Kansas State arc in the tournament, though no team scoring will be kept. Jacobson said he wants to sec his players give their all in this week end’s play. T want the girls to go out and give a 100 percent effort, both menially and physically,” Jacobson said. “1 want them to be satisfied with their performances, win or lose.” Jacobson said he would be satis fied if the Huskcrs put the same type of dedication into this weekend’s tournament as they have been in prac tice. Senior Rachel Collins, who will play at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles with newcomer Zarina Glavan, said the invitational will show her a lot of things. “I’m looking forward to compet ing and seeing how well I play with my new doubles partner,” Collins said. “This will also give us a chance to sec how the singles and doubles lineups look.” Other squads competing in the eight team tourney include Baylor, Minne sota, Texas Tech and Wichita State. Competition will begin at 9 a.m. today and continue throughout the weekend at the Cather-Pound courts. The singles championships will start at 9 a.m. Sunday and die doubles finals will follow at 2 p.m.
