Club Continued from Page 9 accessible group, such as Depeche Mode. Conover said he thinks the only bars in Lincoln bringing in real live music are the Zoo Bar and Duffy’s. But there are still untapped sources on which to draw. He wants to attract bands who might be trav elling from coast to coast, taking advantage of Lincoln’s central loca tion. Conover said Lincoln can be better used for record labels to expose their bands. “Even though the Zoo has re cently been bringing in reggae and world beat bands, the market is large enough for more than just one bar,” Conover said. “My goal is to resurrect (the musical element of) The Drum stick,” he said. Until it closed sev eral years ago, The Drumstick served as the prime live purveyor of un derground and alternative bands in Lincoln. The difference of Fat City will be constant dancing, and music — even on nights when bands are playing — both before and after they perform. According to Conover, the club will be “full-tilt boogie. ” There will be cheap import beer always on tap, a light menu, pool tables, video monitors showing “eclectic video compilations” and, of course, “stoner” lights. -1 Is Your Hair Physically Fit? Bad dancing may be disguised by slam dancing, stage diving By Bryan Peterson Senior Editor I have never been able to dance and probably never will be. The motion and the rhythm just do not seem to be in me, for all the en couragement of one of my friends who can dance anytime, anywhere. No, there is one place where she has never danced, which is also the only place where I have come close to dancing: the slam pit at a punk concert. At its best, the slam pit is a whirl ing mass of people dancing and jumping and crashing together at break-neck speed while a band does the same onstage. But at its worst, slam dancing lets a few muscle heads pummel everyone else who is trying to have a good time. There is, or should be, a method to the madness. People should not fjet hurt, despite how dangerous it ooks to someone standing several feet off. Many would deny that slam ming or thrashing is a form of dance, but it certainly involves moving one’s body with other people in unison witn music, creat ing motion in space. It is ideal because things are moving so fast and in so many ways that no one can tell whether or not a person is dancing the right way. In fact, there really isn’t a right way to slam: pretty much anything goes, as long as folks are not get ting hurt. Pushing that notion to the ex trerpe, we come to stage-diving, in which a listener jumps onstage with the band, tries to elude bodyguards, leaps onto the crowd in front of the stage, and is passed around over head for some lime. Such activities are great for some one like me who completely lacks any ability to dance in front of other people. But why dance in front of them if you can dance on top of them? UNL student dance group supplies chance for non-majors to perform in a production ny oryan merson Senior Editor With the presence of Orchesis on the UNL campus, sludentsinter ested in dancing need not be dance majors to be involved in a dance production. Orchesis is a student dance group found on many campuses across the country. Karise Rupert, a junior English major, is president of the UNL Orchesis group. Rupert said tne UNL group pres ents one show at the end of the second semester each year. Last year’s performance, “Dance is Everything," sold out both nights that it was presented in 304 Mabel Lee Hall, the same place the group See ORCHESIS on 13
