Unlike last year, when they waited last weekend of the season to ich, this title came easy. The Pirates took the lead on April and never gave it up, building their d from 2 1/2 games in late July to Current 13 1/2— the biggest East vision runaway since the Mcts won 15 in 1988. Nothing unusual, Hobert said. “We knew we’d have the middle open and that’s what we were looking for,” Hobert said. “That’s four-down territory. There was no doubt that we’d go for it.” And the Huskies had no question that they’d march down the field against the Huskers, Hobert said. “I thought we had them all night long,” he said. “I just wasn’t throwing strikes in the first half.” But of the four touchdown strikes in the second half, the shortest drive was the most crucial, James said. After Washington snatched the lead on a 15-yard touchdown run by Bryant, Husker quarterback Keithen McCant fumbled at Nebraska’s 33-yard line. Aided by a pass interference call against Nebraska comerback Kenny Wilhite on third-and-19, Hobert scored from three yards out, capping the nine-play drive. “When the defense finally con tributed in getting the turnover, that just jacked us all up,” James said. Washington’s defense held Ne braska to just one first down in the third quarter and four in the fourth quarter. After totaling 199 yards in the first half, Nebraska gained just 109 yards after the intermission. “We just weren’t getting the job done in the first half,” defensive tackle Steve Emtman said. “We started play ing team defense, battled it out and got the job done.” But after recording eight tackles, Emtman said it was one of his rough est jobs. “This is one of the toughest games I’ve ever played in,” Emtman said. “They’re physical, no doubt. And there is no doubt they’re back, if they were ever gone.” Hobcrt said Nebraska fans’ ova tion as Washington leftafter the game was “incredible.” “If I was a fan, I would have been applauding, too,” Hobcrt said. “That was a hell of a game.” MITSUBISHI SERVICE TEAM J Courtesy vechicle to take you to and from your destination rn rr fall safety rtYCC INSPECTION \ A Complete Bumper-To-Bumper inspection to assure your driving will be safe and hassle-free. ■ We check your vehicle's brakes, antifreeze, lights, windshield ■ washer fluid, power steering fluid, engine oil, automatic transmis- I sion fluid, fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter, battery cables, wiper I blades, shocks, belts & hoses, tire pressure, tire wear, and * exhaust system.
