Festival Continued from Page 11 wine or water. The Renaissance Festival is fit for people of all ages. There’s a petting zoo and medieval carnival rides for the kids, while the adults have a pub that features entertainment with adult humor. When you get tired of milling through shops, you can take in a few of the nearly four dozen shows. All of the outdoor events feature family entertainment in the form of comedy, music, magic and drama. Nearly all include audience participation. The Society of Creative Anachro nism gives weapons demonstrations, with members competing in melees and one-on-one combat. Even walking through the streets of the village can prove entertaining, with its cast of jugglers, royalty, bandits, town drunks and story tell ers. The Renaissance Festival is con tinuing every weekend through Octo ber 13. Since it’s well within road trip distance, it’s an event that shouldn’t be missed. American Heart Association Nebraska Affiliate Vertigo's noisy pop to deafen Union By Michael Stock Senior Reporter Don’t plan on studying in the Nebraska Union on Saturday night. With the likes of Fugazi, Vertigo, Ritual Device and Sideshow playing upstairs, the last thing on your mind will be books. Highlighting the show, with Fu gazi in their premiere Lincoln per -CODI^Sifc]— formance, are noise-pop up-and comers, Vertigo. Hailing from Min neapolis, Vertigo promises to pro vide music very different from the Replacements/Soul Asylum power pop that the Twin Cities have become known for. Power pop? “I hate those terms,” said Jared Aos, Vertigo’s master of guitar, bass and vocals. “I think (the music is) more powerful. But there’s still songs with more melody. More energy. Less poppy.” For the last 3 1/2 years, Vertigo has made enough noise for two sub pop bands. Since their First, self-re leased “Two Lives 7,” Vertigo has been turning heads. The Ampheta mine Reptile label executive heads were twisted right off their necks. The headless bunch signed the trio of noisy guitars and healthy pop pinch to record two singles and their self-titled LP. Vertigo is a bit different from many of their Amphetamine Reptile label mates. They are more than noise. The pop is buried underneath more layers of guitar than usual. And Amphetamine doesn’t seem to mind the pop hooks. “There’s no pressure at all,” Aos said. “We’re doing just what we want.” Both Aos and band mate Gene Tangren play guitar, bass and sing. Aos and Tangren share the responsi bilities of song-writing, playing and singing while new drummer Bill Beeman effectively thunders in the background. Half of the set is usually composed of both Aos and Tangren playing guitar with no bass, giving the band an en tirely different sound. “It’s kind of subtle. The melody is there. Even the feedback is inten tional,” Aos said. What about the dancing girls? “No. We’re pretty down on any kind of gimmicks,” Aos said. “We just get up there and play our asses off.” With a new album scheduled for a January release, this Saturday’s Lin coln appearance is only a precursor to the future. A six-week European tour is in the planning stages, slated for early February, to be followed by a six-week tour encompassing both coasts. Aos said that the band is looking forward to a more extensive touring schedule. x “Touring is good for the band. Just being together, the lifestyle . . . get ting to know each other better,” he said. “It becomes a lifestyle.” Vertigo’s music means as many - different things to the band as to the listener. “It’s music that makes us laugh sometimes. It’s an emotional release. A lot of the songs are therapeutic. This is what we love to do... what we love to play.” The show, sponsored by the Uni versity Program Council Concert and Disco, starts at 7 p.m. in the union. Tickets to see the four bands are $5 at the door.
