UNL police
pick up new
computers
By Lori Stones
Staff Reporter
—— -g,
The University of Nebraska-Lin
coln Police Department is adjusting
to a new computer system that should 1
help officers be more efficient, ac
cording to a police sergeant.
Sgt. John Lustrea said the new
system, which went into effect Aug.
1, contains basic incident and case
reports.
Lustrea said the system allows
officers to “make more efficient use
of time” by providing quick reference
to case numbers, names and license
plate numbers.
Thus far, he said, the only disad
vantage to the system is that a few
officers aren’t skilled typists, making
speed a problem.
Once familiar with the system, he
said, the officers should find it “very
easy,... designed to be user friendly.”
The computers also will ease the
preparation of crime statistics, he said.
Before the system was installed,
he said, officers had to compile the
information for statistics by hand.
Now students who want to know
about crime statistics will be able to
obtain the information over the phone,
he said.
The system was fairly inexpen
sive, Lustrea said, because it is con
nected to the mainframe computer in
the parking department. The police
had to purchase just three terminals to
operate the system.
