Officials: UNL closer to gender equity
by correcting faculty salary differences
By Eric Snyder
Staff Reporter
The university’s effort to pul its
money where its mouth is on gender
equity drew praise from two faculty
leaders.
Deanna Eversoll, secretary of the
Academic Senate, applauded the re
cent decision by UNL officials to
distribute faculty salary raises in a
way that helps correct gender and
racial pay inequities.
“Certainly any move towards
addressing the problem is supported,”
she sai<^
James McShanc, former president
erf- the Academic Senate, also expressed
support for the effort to correct salary
differences at UNL.
“We’d better sec to it that the
inequities (in salary) arc fixed,”
McShane said. “We can’t afford to
lose good people.”
UNL administrators recently set
i' 1 -
aside $350,000 of the $1.7 million
pay raise for faculty to correct pay
discrepancies based on gender and
race. ;
Recent surveys done by the Chan- '
cellor’s Commission on the Status of
Women found that women in office/ 1
service or managcrial/professional
positions at UNL make substantially
less than men with comparable edu
cation and experience.
A March 22 report found that
women in officc/servicc positions made
$2,362 less than men in comparable
positions.
Women in managcrial/professional
positions made $3,294 less than their
male counterparts. Both figures were
adjusted for education and experi
ence.
Mary Beck, chairwoman of the
Chancellor’s Commission on the Status
of Women, said women faculty
members at UNL make on the aver
age $600 less than faculty members
who arc men.
The university is moving toward
ilrcngthening another gender equity
lolicy by reviewing the performance
if administrators. Regent Charles
Wilson of Lincoln, who leads a gen
Jer equity committee, is pushing for
.he reviews.
The intention of the policy would
ic to evaluate the hiring practices of
Jcpartmcnts to sec that they arc making
irogress Toward proportional gender
epresentation.
The university currently has a fair
liring policy, but an administrative
eviewing policy would “put some
cclh” in the gender equity move
ment, according to Brad Munn, Af
firmative Action and equal employ
ment opportunity officer.
Discriminatory administrators have
10 one to whom to answer at the
present time, Munn said.
“The administrative review would
give accountability to the current
policy,” he said.
