    AS UN to continue efforts
to gain student appointment
By Adeana Leftin
Staff Reporter_
What ASUN started last week with
its efforts to have the governor ap
point a student to the Nebraska Coor
dinating Commission for Postsecon
dary Education may be finished at
tonight’s meeting.
Senators have proposed a resolu
tion encouraging University of Ne
braska-Lincoln Interim Chancellor
Jack Goebel and other university of
ficials to convey their opinions on the
matter to Gov. Ben Nelson.
At last Wednesday’s meeting, the
Association of Students of the Uni
versity of Nebraska failed to pass a
similar amendment to a resolution
that encouraged Nelson to appoint a
student.
Teachers College Sen. Steve Th
omlison said he thinks it is essential
to have a student appointed to the
commission and that last Wednes
day’s resolution was “an important
first step.”
The resolution carried the weigh!
of the feelings of 23,000 students,
Thomlison said.
But, he said, anything that can be
done to improve the chances of an
appointment should be done.
ASUN President Andy Massey said
pressure from students would be more
effective.
“Students and numbers are more
important than one man,” he said.
The senate also will discuss lobby
ing the Nebraska Legislature to sup
port the George W. Beadle Center foi
Genetics and Biomaterials Research.
Massey said the Beadle Center is
important for students in that it would
bring more research, quality teach
ers, money and programs to the uni
versity. f
“I think that our institution needs
research,” he said. “That’s what sets
us apart.”
ASUN also will decide the fate of
a racial affairs subcommittee.

“You have a lack of balance in the
educational sphcre.’This lack of bal
ance deprives both students and teach
ers of the learning experience that a
university is supposed to provide, he
said.
Smith said students only see a
European perspective and arc unaware
of how to deal with other cultures.
“Students arc left with blinders
on,” he said.
“Most people when they think of a
minority student, up pops the idea of
a black athlete.”
Such stereotypes would be erased
I
if the university actively recruited
minorities with different racial back
grounds, disciplines and interests, he
said. From there, the classroom
atmosphere would change.
“Minority students must receive
respect in the classroom ... so that
students see learning runs across the
racial line,” he said.
Griesen said he thinks the univer?
sity is heading toward a more diverse
community, but the resources aren't
^available to implement all the re
port’s recommendations immediately.
Many of the recommendations,
Griesen said, are being tackled and
some arc just a matter of time.
