Oscar Continued from Page 9 each other. The “father” in question was Oscar, the chauffeur and name sake of the film, who has enlisted and been sent abroad. Snaps’ wife gets into the act, in sisting that it is Snaps’ duty as a father to save their daughter’s tattered honor and find her a husband, in between getting fitted for a new suit, elocution lessons and meeting the bankers at noon in an effort to go legit. . Stallone is finally given a chance o shine, with a decent script and real dialogue. His comic ability is obvi ous, and he sparkles in a role that seems made for him. Although his role is simply a stereotype of the Italian gangster, Stallone carries itoff with style. Tomei, as the pampered princess who yearns to be released from her gilded cage, is funny and plays her role to the hilt, giving as good as she gets. And the film has an excellent supporting cast — without which “Oscar” would not have been as funny. Also, in a cameo role as the mori bund Provolone Sr., we get Kirk Douglas as a crotchety old man. His last wish is that his son become hon est, and he wants to slap Junior around just a few more times before he goes. “Oscar” is a hilarious ride, full of belly laughs and hard-fought happy endings. Amazingly enough, the mess is resolved, with a few unexpected twists — even though the old man’s dying request is not honored. On the whole, “Oscar” is well worth the time and the cash. “Oscar” is playing at the Lincoln Theatre, 12th and P streets. --1 Psycho Continued from Page 9 sweetheart, it is revealed that he enjoyed murdering women even during his college years. But since that time, Bateman has gotten more creative and psy chotic in his methods for killing. This is also apparent in the way the book is written. Each successive murder sequence is more disgust ing than the last. 'In addition to becoming more gruesome, Bateman also becomes more careless; one starts to get the idea that he actually wants to get caught. But each time, he walks away without suspicion. For example, Bateman is amazed and exhilarated when he manages to walk away from a scene at the zoo where he kills a 5-year-old boy in a crowded penguin gazebo. But for all of this lack of cau tion, along with a confession on an answering machine, no one even suspects that Bateman is anything more than eccentric. This may be Ellis’ way of mak ing a statement about the current state of our society, especially in larger cities such as New York. “American Psycho” could be a deliberate stab at the way people choose to ignore acts of violence rather than acknowledging that such things can exist. Or, it could sim ply be an effort to shock the world and capitalize on the morbid curi osity of society. But whatever its target may be, “American Psycho” is too gross to be truly entertaining. Cowboy Continued from Page 9 both Robert Johnson efforts; and “Baby Please Don’t Go,” a Bukka White song. The album’s only problem is a lack of energy. Although the band’s understated, slow style definitely is an asset, one or two songs with a faster rhythm would serve to balance the album. “Forgive Me” is the only song with even a hint of energy. Other than minor lethargy, The Cowboy Junkies’ latest effort is defi nitely worth the hard-earned money. Cavedogs Continued from Page 9 A fitting description. The voice is really that pure and the music borders masterfully on grunge. The key to The Cavedogs sonic perfection lies in simplicity. B^nd members say they feel the band will do fine, as long as they don’t learn any more chords. “Yeah. Yeah. As long as we don’t get too damn fancy,” Rivers added. “You know, we are a three-piece. If you do too much of the three-piece, you start to become Rush,” Rivers explained, giggling. “Joyrides forShut-Ins,’’The Cave dogs’ debut, is actually a collection of demos. The songs have been cleaned up, and a couple have been re-re corded by Ed Stasium of Smither eens, Soul Asylum and Ram ones fame. The band doesn’t seem to mind the release of its demos. In fact, members are pretty adamant in retaining the rougher, original sound, Rivers said. “We always did them with the intention of ‘ let’s do them so we don ’ t have to come back and record another tired version. Let’s get it right while we like the song,”’ Rivers explained. The story behind the release of “Joyrides For Shut-Ins” is involved. Originally Enigma Records was going to release “Joyrides” last spring, but decided to release it in August. The band was disappointed, to say the least. ‘“Oh man. Really? We’ve gotta sit around... hang out at our day jobs for that much longer?’” Rivers said. The Cavedogs convinced Enigma to record an EP to release to college station^#. The then four-song EP was completed too soon after the release of the album, so it was never released. Until now. Recently, Enigma Records went to that place in the sky that all defunct record companies go to when they pass on. However, The Cavedogs didn’t have to go with them. <« Capitol Records picked up The Cavedogs’ option and re-released “Joyrides For Shut-Ins” last month. That was where the EP came to see light. , “It (the EP) never really got re leased. So, when we did the Capitol thing, they needed something to give the record another life,” Rivers said. Released as an EP featuring a dif ferent version of “Tayter Country,” the six-song EP full of five new and unreleased tracks should be in stores any day. With an endless list of listening faves, The Cavedogs’ influences seem as endless as its possibilities. “MC Hammer. Let me tell you. He’s our favorite labelmate,” Rivers joked. “I’m probably truest to the power-pop stuff. We listen to every thing from Fugazi to Abba,” grunted Rivers in his best Casey Kasem voice. An Abba rebirth, then? “God .. . We can only hope so,” Rivers chuckled. Another Cavedog release soon? God ... We can only hope so. 2 Appliances Dorm refrigerator for sale: 1 year old. 3.5 cu. ft..
