DN news judgement challenged; greeks clarify TRIAD UN reporter unfairly covers Fight Night Congratulations, Stacey Mcken zie. That was the best piece of one sided journalism that I have ever read (DN, April 22). Not only did you fail to present the entire story, you took quotes out of context that were in tended to be “off the record.” Why didn’t you mention that over $8,000 was raised for emotionally disturbed and learning disabled chil dren? Why didn’t you contact Ron Dodd, State Athletic Commission Inspector, who said this was one of the most organized events ever put on? Or how about Pat DeBaer, Mid west Amateur Boxing Federation president? Or Doug Emery, of the Midwest ABF, who said this event will go on next year? Ail of these names were given to you, but their comments would not have served you purpose. The altercations that broke were indeed unfortunate, and I am truly sorry that my two friends were hurt. Security, however, is something that was not lacking. The eight off'duty deputies that you mentioned were hired by us and were already on hand to dispel any such altercations. The three on-duty deputies never even entered the building. You made it sound as if deputies were rousted out of bed to disperse a riot. Wrong. That’s pretty shoddy journalism. Craig Gundersen junior marketing Fight Night co-chairman Sorority members justify T-shirts for TRIAD We would like to lake the time to point out some important issues con cerning the 1991 TRIAD T-shirts. To begin with, the three houses involved were Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma and Pi Beta Phi, not Gamma Phi Beta. These three houses are among the first to be chartered here at UNL. This is where the meaning behind “elite” is derived. We assess the meaning for “privi leged” as coming from the fact that we feel lucky to have an opportunity (TRIAD) to unite three established sororities on this campus, to celebrate our sisterhood. We would also like to address Daniel P. Thibodeau’s concerns about the connotations of the “elite” party T shirt. His concerns were discussed prior to the printing of the T-shirt and, as a result, a second T-shirt was de signed that did not include the “elite” logo. The decision on which T-shirt to purchase w as left up to the individ r- —■ -LETTERS tTh°e EDITOR ual, not the house. We would also like to acknowl edge that as a result of owning the “elite” T-shirt, we do not feel supe rior as a member of a given sorority. We feel that often when it comes to the greek system, people tend to confuse superiority with pride. As members of the UNL greek system, we are often stereotyped and perse cuted for issues and ideas that non grcck individuals are not. An example is the wearing of a party T-shirt. Please keep in mind that groups, such as sororities, are composed of individuals; therefore, criticism should be aimed at individuals and not the entire sorority system. We would like to close by stating that we are voicing our opinions as individuals, and not representatives of our respective house. Mary Cooper sophomore elementary education Kathy DeRosear freshman English Sorority denies any association with ‘elite’ T-shirt This letter is in response to Daniel P. Thibodeau’s letter April 25.1 would like to suggest that Mr. Thibodeau research his topic to a greater extent. Obviously, he did not realize that the Gamma Phi Beta sorority had noth ing to do with TRIAD or the “elite and privileged” T-shirts. The third member of the TRIAD is Pi Beta Phi. The women of Pi Beta Phi also had nothing to do with the T shirts. We as a chapter voted to pur chase our own T-shirt design in light of the fact that many of us found the “elite and privileged” design to be objectionable. I do not feel that we are “socially superior,” “arrogant” or “uncultured.” I am proud to be a part of the greek system, and I am sorry that the implications made by this T shirtdesign mightdevalue the reputa tion of all fraternities and sororities at UNL. Katherine A. Scott junior international affairs DN photograph violates privacy of seizure student As I picked up my daily copy of the Daily Nebraskan on April 23, I was appalled when I saw the front -- page. There was a picture of a stu dent, who had experienced a seizure, being carried away by paramedics. There was no article, just a picture. The poor guy — his personal privacy was totally violated. Whose business is it that he had a seizure? What is gained by exploiting him by printing his picture on the front page of the newspaper? Does everyone that gets carried away by an ambulance get on the front page? Is that news? The purpose of a newspaper is to keep people informed. That picture was not newsworthy and did not per tain to any article. What is the point of printing such a picture? After seeing that choice of front-page photogra phy, sorry, guys, but I strongly doubt your journalistic ethics and integrity. It was not as if he was shot by a Love Library employee. It is bad enough that he had to experience something embarrassing over which he had no control — now he is constantly reminded by it, thanks to your extremely poor judgement. Hey, mister, whoever you are, we feel for you! Jennifer K. Ross junior sociology Sigma Chi house unjustly labeled after Fight Night In response to several editorials in the April 25 Daily Nebraskan. Sharon O’ Neil, were you at Fight Night? The fights that occurred in the crowd at Fight Night were extremely over blown, just as were your presump tions about the Sigma Chi house. I am sure there are many, many females who will argue your statement, “I certainly fear for any woman who enters into the Sigma Chi fraternity house.” Have you ever been inside Sigma Chi? Obviously you have not. Have you ever been to a football game, Sharon? Students get drunk before games and go to them. Stu dents fight in the stands, but they are not written about in the DN, as well they shouldn’t be — just as Fight Night shouldn’t have been written about in such a negative way. Students in residence halls drink in their rooms also— don’t single out fraternities, they are not the only places on campus that students can drink with “impunity.” Just as many people would have attended Fight Night had there not been beer served, guaran teed! Mark Rinehart is correct in his statement that “ .. .it is the job of the DN to inform the student body who supports it, of the positive things that are being done for the community by students of UNL . . ” The greck system has indeed fallen into the “rumor mill” and it will indeed work its way up to receive the respect it deserves, but when the DN, a so called newspaper of ALL the stu dents, consistently cuts itdown, there is little we can do to project a positive image. Lately, the DN has been playing on the misfortunes of people, injuries at Fight Night, seizures at Love Li brary. Why don’t you try projecting a positive outlook and be creative in stead of the constant criticism and redundancy? Finally to Pohl Longsine. Fight Night was organized very profession ally and the fighters trained and fought in a fair manner. They did not receive money for their efforts; they did it to help a charity. If you feel boxing is not a good sport, fine, but this was more than that; it was a philanthropy.
