Slam min’ grooves ‘Beans’ serves no variety By Jim Hanna Senior Reporter__ Jellybean “Spillin’ the Beans” Atlantic Records Rating: 21/2 Ratings are 1 (bad) to 5 (excellent). As a child, you never thought you’d hear yourself say it. You hated it every time your parents or grandpar ents said it. It was the phraseology of hopelessly outdated old people. “The music you kids listen to these days all sounds the same.” The latest album from re-mix king Jellybean is bound to have millions of young adults muttering that phrase for the first time in their lives. There are 10 songs on “Spillin’ the Beans,” and the only thing that distin guishes one from the other is the five second pause between each cut. But hey, that’s the nature of dance music. Jellybean has been making dance albums since the mid-’80s and is considered a primary architect of modem dance pop. He usually works on other people’s albums, helping to re-mix their music into what he calls “slammin’ dance grooves.” “Spillin’ the Beans” is described as a solo effort, though that may be - u But dance music isn’t really about the vocals. Dance music is good if ... well, if you can dance to it. Most dance fans should have no trouble doing that with ‘‘Spillin’ the Beans”. -tt - somewhat misleading. While Jelly bean worked out all the arrangements and did the drum programming, he contributes lead vocals on only three of the album’s songs. The ma jority of the singing is done by three other singers. They are Cindy Valentine, DeAnna Evans and Niki Haris, all of whom sang back-up on Madonna’s Blonde Ambition tour — which supposedly is a big deal. Make no mistake, these women can sing. Their voices are everything a dance album asks for: smooth, lush, soulful, loud, maybe even that slam min’ groove thing. But dance music isn’t really about I the vocals. Dance music is good if... well, if you can dance to it. Most dance fans should have no trouble doing that with “Spillin* the Beans.” Ignoring the fact that it all sounds the same, the music is not too bad. You might never play it at home while you do your homework but it should go over well at the Precinct. Even people who hate synthetic dance music should be able to respect what Jellybean is able to do with this album. Re-mixing is more than steal ing other people’s music and playing it backwards with a drum machine thumping underneath. Jellybean merges a lot of musical styles, rhythms and even sound effects into an almost seamless series of... um... slammin’ dance grooves. Don’t buy “Spillin’ the Beans” if you like real music—but think about buying it if you like Club MTV.
