Robin Trimarchi/Daify Nebraskan I Emilia Juarez Student honored for involvement By Adeana Leftin Staff Reporter Emi 1 ia Juarcz’s efforts to bridge gaps between University of Nc braska-Lincoln students earned her a Sue Tidball Award for Creative Humanity Sunday night. Juarez, a senior Spanish and English major, said she thought it was her involvement on campus that won her the award. “I’m usually pretty involved in different kinds of movements going on to create a better environment on campus,” she said. One area Juarez said she would like to see improved is the recruit ment of minority faculty and staff members at UNL. “It’s a sad thing for me as a student to know that there arc no Mcxican-Amcrican female faculty members on campus,” she said. Juarez said it is important for students to have role models from their cultural backgrounds. She said white children look up to their teachers. When that teacher criticizes, it hurts, but when the teacher praises, thechild iscncour aged. Many times, Juarez said, a while teacher simply doesn’t know cer tain aspects of the Mexican-Ameri can culture that a student could be praised for. ‘‘I think culture is important,” she said. Juarez was born in the United States, but her parents arc from Mexico. She said “culture’s always been been there for me,” but third- and fourth-generation immigrants to the United States may lose some of their culture. “For us to be able to hold up our culture to our kids is of the ultimate importance,” Juarez said. Another goal she said she has been working for is the creation of a Racial Affairs Committee on the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska. “A predominantly white AS UN is saying, ‘Yes, we do want to represent our students,” Juarez said, “but there’s a lot of work that needs to be done.” Juarez said she was “happily surprised” about the acknowledge ment of her work. “I’m just trying to say that ‘Yes, it is possible to make a difference on our campus.’ And ‘Yes, it is possible to have cultural harmony,”’ : she said. “We students just need to take action.” Brazilian to speak about environment From Staff Reporter Brazilian journalist Edmilson Caminha will speak Thursday on “Environmental Issues in Brazil: The Pamaiba River and Slate of Piaui” at the Culture Center.
