Parking group suggests sale of night spots From Staff Reports Members of the Parking Ad visory Committee suggested Monday at a meeting in the East Union that night permits even tually will be sold to commuters parking on campus lots after 7 p.m. The recommendation came after several committee mem bers heard complaints from com muters not able to use reserved spots during evening hours. The current mix of 11- and 24-hour permits in the same lot north of the Nebraska Union is creating a problem, Business Manager Ray Coffey said. “I don’t think that’s a man ageable situation,” Coffey said. “We’ve got to separate those lots and sort it out.” The committee also suggested that 24-hour reserved parking lots and other lots close to campus should be enforced more strin gently to curb illegal use of those lots by students taking night classes. Other suggestions made by the committee: • Provide reserved parking spaces for custodial employees, most of whom arc women and must walk four to five blocks on unlit paths to their cars. • Include in the registration I fee for regularly scheduled night time events a charge for public users of UNL parking lots. These recommendations and a report prepared by Walker Parking ConsultantsofMinnca polis, a firm hired by UNL park ing officials to make recom mendations on improving park ing on both campuses, will be addressed at the committee’s next meeting April 1. • 1 Peer Continued from Page 1 rado State University, Iowa State University, Kansas State University the University of Massachusetts a Amherst, Oklahoma State University Oregon State University, the Univer sity of Tennessee-Knoxville and Wash ington State University. UNL’s current comparison group includes Illinois, Iowa State, Mary land, Michigan Stale, Minnesota Missouri, Ohio State, Penn State Purdue and Wisconsin. The average faculty salaries of the NCHEMS peer group are closer tc UNL’s salaries than the current peci group, according to the study. Although Moore said it is no sccrci that he has not agreed with the currcn reference group, he said no officia changes have been made. “It is my hope that in the future wc can develop a reference group that wc can all agree on,” he said. Before an agreeable reference group can be created, Moore said, UNL should be contacted. John Benson, UNL director ol Institutional Research Planning anc Fiscal Analysis, said contact betweer NCHEMS and UNL would be “ver) important” in creating a new com parison group. “I have some difficulties with ar outside group determining what the criteria ought to be ... without con lading the university,” he said. Moore disagreed. “We wanted an independent poin of view without the university’s bias in it,” he said. Benson said the comparison group UNL has used for salary purpose* should continue, but other groups mighi be appropriate for other areas. An area that might not be appro priate for comparison with Americar Association of Universities land-grani institutions is tuition, Benson said because 90 pjcrccnt of UNL student* come from within Nebraska. Information on the suitability ol the current peer group for salary pur px)scs was contained in a discussior paper Benson issued to the chancel lor’s staff in February. The paper wa* meant to be a supporting documem and to assist staff members respond ing to the Legislature, Benson said.
