“To see a person stand up at crunch
time like she did, that takes a lot of
guts,” Huppert said. “Even though
her times weren ’ t as fast as a year ago,
she comes back this year to totally
dominate. It absolutely amazes me.”
Butcher said she was surprised at

“I was happy at being awarded the

she said.
Huppert said many of his swim

The Nebraska men’s tennis team
swept through Creighton and Wic
hita State this weekend with 9-0
triumphs.
Both duals took place within 24
hours, the best preparation for
conference competition according
to coach Kerry McDermott.
“These wins helped build up
our character and discipline,”
McDermott said. ‘These matches
will really help us when the Big
Eight comes around.”
After defeating the Bluejays
Friday night, the true test for Ne
braska was to come back 10 hours
later and play a competitive Wic
hita Slate squad, McDermott said.
The Huskers swept by the Shock
ers, though many of the Nebraska
players claimed fatigue got to them.
“I couldn’t get fired up for
Wichita State,” said No. 6 singles
player Joey Salerno, who didn’t
lose a set over the weekend in
singles or at No. 2 doubles with
Anthony Kotarac. “After gelling
just four hours of sleep, fatigue
was definitely a factor.”
No. 1 singles and doubles player
Maflhinc Mni'llr*r u/hn ic
26th nationally, didn’t defeat his
competition as easily. Mueller had
to fight back to defeat Darren Frlan
of Wichita State 2-6,6-4,6-3.
“1 didn’t start playing well until
the middle of the second set,”
Mueller said. “After he hooked me
on a shot, I got motivated and ready
to play.”
Mueller also blamed the Bob
Devaney SportsCcntcr’scourts for
his problems.
“These are the worst facilities
I’ve ever seen,” said Mueller, who
also had troubles at No. 1 doubles
with Scott Randolph, edging their
Shocker counterparts 4-6,7-6,7-5.
“I’m very happy that Big Eight
play is outdoors, and not here.”
Nebraska will travel to Iowa
City, Iowa, this weekend to battle
Iowa and Gustavus Adolphus, and
will not compete at home again
until April 13.

Nebraska’s Bill Vosik is thrown out trying to steal

Sunday’s game. The Cornhuskers won 9-1. Vosik went
2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Josh Bullock,
Chris Eckley and Dave Matranga combined for the
three-hitter, allowing only one unearned run. The teams
will play a doubleheader today starting at 1 p.m. at Buck

Kansas went on to crush Colorado
on Sunday 76-56 in one semifinal.
Regular-season champion Oklahoma
State defeated Kansas State 87-70.
Kansas and Oklahoma State will play
