    Football, Olympics popular,
wrestling tops disliked list
Th® Associated Press
Americans love football, the Olym
pics, baseball, basketball and figure
skating.
They hate to watch wrestling, golf,
boxing, Roller Derby and hockey —
or at least enough people do to put
those sports atop die least-popular
list.
Those are some of die findings of
survey of America’s sports tastes.
People were asked to give their opin
ions of 71 participant sports and 114
spectator sports.
Professional football topped all
sports with 39 percent of Americans
saying they loved it or considered it
one of their favorites. NCAA football
ran second, followed by the Winter
Olympics, Summer Olympics, major
league baseball, high school football,
NBA basketball and figure skating.
Some major sports flopped in the
survey. NHL hockey ranked 40th,
men’s pro tennis 68th, women’s pro
tennis 71st and World Cup soccer
75th.
Auto racing may pack huge crowds
at the tracks, but Indy-CART racing
ranks only 26th in popularity, just
behind NASCAR.
PGA golf, shown nearly every week
on national television because it ap
peals to wealthier, older viewers
important to the sport’s sponsors,
ranked 43rd — behind tractor pulls
and body-building. The LPGA golf
was even further behind at No. 69.
Pro wrestling topped the unpopu
larity list, drawing “dislike” or “hate”
responses from two of five people.
Not far behind were the LPGA, PGA
Seniors, pro boxing, intercollegiate
wrestling, PGA and amateur boxing,
NFL football was preferred by three
of five men and baseball by two of
five men. Only one of five women
cared much for either sport.
But when it came to figure skating
and ice dancing, women preferred
them more than men by a 3-1 margin.
Pro boxing was high on both the
most popular and most unpopular sports
lists.

Lincoln. He had struggled since re
turning from the injury and was not in
Wednesday’s starting lineup. But he
played 32 minutes and added eight
rebounds and seven assists to hispoint
total. He also hit three three-pointers
after a prolonged shooting slump.
“Peeler had a tremendous first half
and a very good basketball game.”
Nee said. “He’s a very good player.”
“(Missouri assistant) coach (Bob)
Sunvold and I were working on my
shot in practice yesterday,” Peeler
said. “It felt pretty good. I just made
sure I went straight up with it instead
of leaning in like I have been.”
Missouri dominated the statistics
as well as the scoreboard, shooting
belter than Nebraska and outre
bounding the Huskers with more as
sists and fewer turnovers.
Aside from the statistics, Nee saw
the game as a matter of one team
being more prepared than the other.
“They were ready to play,” Nee
said. “We just weren’t prepared. It
wasn’t pretty.”
