Harlem Globetrotter Lou Dunbar bares all for referee Terry
Chappell during the Globetrotters’ stop at the Pershing
Auditorium Wednesday.
Women’s Swimming: The team
has been having a good week of
practice in preparation for Friday ’s
dual meet with Southern Illinois,
Coach Ray Huppert said. With the
exception of Beth Smith, who has a
sore shoulder, the team is healthy.
Men’s Swimming: Graduate as
sistant coach Ed Lower said times
should improve for the Huskers
against Southern Illinois. A few
team members are recovering from
the flu, he said. Track: Some women
sprinters and some throwers will
travel to Manhattan, Kan. for the
Kansas State Open on Saturday,
Coach Gary Pepin said. Some other
people will go to Kansas and com
pete unattached, he said. The Big
Eight conference meet will be Feb.

But that doesn’t make the Huskers
the pseudo-Sooners. The Husker King,
Rich, doesn’t run to half court and
pretend he’s rolling dice, like die
Sooner King, Stacey, used to do. As
far as I know, the Huskers don’t flip
off opposing crowds very often.
Danny Nee doesn’t imitate movie stars.
Everyone must remember just how
obnoxious the Sooners were in the
last half of the 1980s. They won a ton,
ran up the score and flaunted every
advantage.
In fact, the only thing more ir ritat
ing than Oklahoma’s recent arrogance
is the year-in, year-out programmed
pomposity at Kansas (another reason
I should have done something like
spit in dial writer’s pop).
That’s why Saturday should be so
m uch fun for Nebraska fans and Okla
homa haters. About 14,500 members
of both groups will pack the Bob
Devaney Sports Center to watch the
Huskers play the Sooners that night.
Nebraska is 20-4 (savor that for a
minute) and 6-3 in the Big Eight.
Oklahoma is 15-9 and 4-5 in the Big
Eight, with losses in six of their last
seven games (savor that for an hour).
Oklahoma Coach Billy Tubbs had
nothing to say in a teleconference
Monday (savor that for the rest of
your life, because it won’t happen
again).
Nebraska is the better team. Ne
braska proved that it is the better team
by routing Oklahoma a few weeks
ago.
And Nebraska should win Satur
day. The Huskers, 20-4 overall,6-3 in
the Big Eight, still in the conference
race, should annihilate the Sooners.
The Huskers will be playing to
stay in the conference race. The fans,
forgetting the Big Eight for a few
hours, will be cheering for old insults
to be avenged.
What a concept — the Sooners,
timidly sitting at the end of the game
instead of running around like those
10th, 11th and 12th players actually
did anything! The referees giving pity
calls to Billy Tubbs because he’s losing,
not because he’s whining!
And the Huskers will dance and
prance and go in for breakaway dunks
and pull up for three-pointers and
generally walk all over Oklahoma.
Rich King may even step out of
character, walk to half-court and
pretend he is throwing dice.
No, the Huskers aren ’ t the Sooners
this year. Come Saturday, every
Nebraska backer will be thankful for
that.

your career if you’re dedicated to the
sport”
Last year, Novak recorded 1,553
set assists and guided the Comhuskers
to a 32-3 record and their 15th con
secutive Big Eight Championship. She
also was tabbed an All-American for
the second consecutive year.
But despite playing for one of the
best programs in the nai.on, Novak
said there is no comparison between
college players and U.S. National Team
members.
“It’s a whole new level,” Novak
r
said. The players here have been in
the game for so long, and they’ve
been playing together a lot.”
Three setters are in frontof Novak,
including former Husker All-Ameri
can Lori Endicott, who starts for the
national team. Novak said she needs
to raise her level of play and improve
her ball-handling skills to break into
the top three and make the team.
Novak said that former Husker
assistant John Cook, who is an assis
tant for the U.S. men’s team, has
helped make her transition easier.
“Cook has been a big help,” No
vak said. “When you don’t know
anybody and you’re in a new town,
knowing somebody can make a big
difference.”
