Terrilyn Johnson of Kansas grabs a rebound from Nebraska’s Carol Russell during the first
half of Wednesday's contest.
Reserve heroine of win
By Jeff Singer
Staff Reporter
When a team is looking for inspi
ration to carry it to victory in a close
contest, the typical player to look for
is the team’s leader.
But every once in a while, a little
known reserve can become an instant
heroine by putting her team over the
hump in the closing minutes for a big
win.
On Wednesday night, that player
was Carol Russell.
The sparingly used guard scored
eight of the Comhuskers’ last 10 points
late in the second half to help give
Nebraska a one-point win against
Kansas.
Russell, a junior from Manhattan,
Kan., ended the game with 10 points,
well above her 2.7 per game average.
‘ This was one of my best games at
Nebraska,” Russell said. “TTie adre
naline was really running tonight”
After a Jay hawk basket put Kansas
ahead 57-47 with nine minutes re
maining, Coach Angela Beck called
lime out and made what turned out to
be her best decision of the night.
Russell entered the game, substi
tuting for Sue Hesch, and sparked the
Huskcrs like a blast of dynamite.
After assisting on the next two
Nebraska baskets, Russell said, she
thought it was time to start draining
the net.
“After my first basket, everything
started clicking,” Russell said.
She added two more baskets on the
Huskcrs’next two possessions to give
Nebraska a two-point lead with 2:14
left.
The Jayhawks tied the score at 65
the next time down the floor.
The 5-11 guard got the ball with 27
seconds remaining and immediately
was fouled.
“I was nervous, but I’ve been
working a lot on my free throws,”
Russell said. “Mcggan (Yedsena) just
reminded me that it was all mental.”
Russell capped her heroic perform
ance with two free throws, putting
Nebraska in the lead for good.
“After the first one, the second one
was easy,” Russell said.
Russell proved to be a prophet.
Before the game she jokingly told
Beck, “I m going to come off the
bench and score 20 points.”
She didn’t score 20, but her 10 was
just what the Huskers needed to keep
their Big Eight championship hopes
alive.
Russell doesn’t expect to be the
star of every game, but she said that
when one player is on a roll, the rest
of the team gets going as well.
“Karen (Jennings) usually sparks
us, but if she isn’t having a great
game, someone coming off the bench
will hopefully get us going.”
“There was a gap in the middle the
whole night, but everyone was afraid
to take it,” Beck said. “She read the
gap and finally fell comfortable (tak
ing it).”
“I fell she was a big key,” Beck
said.
After tying her season-high of 10
points, which she also accomplished
in a December loss at Iowa, Russell
said she just wanted to sec the team
win.
“I just want to go out there and
contribute,” Russell said. “It worked
out well for me tonight.”
Kiam joke targets woman sports writer
NEW YORK (AP) — New Eng
land Patriots owner Victor Kiam told
a joke that involved Lisa Olson, the
Boston Herald sportswriter harassed
in the locker room last season, and the
Persian Gulf war, according to pub
lished reports.
USA Today, in today’s editions,
reported that people at a male-or>’y
sports banquet where Kiam spoke
quoted the owner as asking what the
Iraqis “have in common with Lisa
Olson? They’ve both seen Patriot
missiles up close.”
Herb Kohn, master of ceremonies
of the Stamford Old-Timers Athletic
Association in Connecticut, told the
newspaper that the remark “was
something along those lines.” Kohn
did not tape the speech by Kiam,
which was given Monday at an asso
ciation awards banquet in Stamford,
where Kiam lives.
Robert Sales, Boston Herald sports
editor, told The Advocate of Stamford
that he was disappointed in Kiam.
“I thought he had apologized and I
thought the apology was sincere,”
Sales said. “I also thought he under
stood the type of pain this gave Lisa
and that he would refrain from this
type of joke.”
Sam Jankovich, the chief execu
tive officer of the Patriots, was unable
to reach Kiarn on Tuesday night.
“Until we are able to speak with
him, it would be inappropriate to
comment,” he said in the report.
In September, Olson was harassed
in New England’s locker room while
covering the Patriots. The NFL inves
tigated the incident and fined Zekc
Mowatl, Michael Timpson and for
mer Patriot Robert Perryman for ver
bal abuse and physical action against
the reporter.

With 8 1/2 minutes remaining, the
Huskers began to claw their way back.
Hubert hit the front end of a one-and
one, but missed the second.
Jennings and Hubert collected
offensive boards on the next two trips
down the court and cut the lead to
five.
Kansas scored the next four points,
but Dahn ended the run with the
Huskers’ only three-pointer.
Kelly Hubert cut the lead to four as
she hit a two-foot jumper from the

Russell scored three straight bas
