Junior-to-be Valerie Vermeulen, who missed much of the early season with illness, left Nebraska last week to join the Maryland volleyball pro gram. A setter, Vermeulen played in four games last fall. She finished her ca reer at Nebraska with 16 digs, 12 kills and two aces. Vermeulen said the biggest reason for leaving was her lack of playing time. “I love it here, and I love the people,” Vermeulen said. “I’m sorry that I have to go.” Vermeulen said she made the decision to leave during the Big Eight tournament and began looking at other programs, including Pittsburgh and Hofstra. Senior-to-be Sara Hesch, whose season was hampered by a shoulder injury, will take a medical hardship next fall. “My shoulder is pretty bad,” Hesch said. “I can play intramural basket ball and it hurts, but it’s nothing like it is during volleyball.” Despite being able to play intra murals, Hesch said she has no inten tions of following twin sister Sue to the Nebraska women’s basketball team. The free time created by the lack of practice will go toward academics, Hesch said. “I’m upset, in a way, that I can’t play volleyball any more,” she said. “I’m going to hit the books now.” A middle blocker who played in 23 matches last season racking up 47 kills, Hesch will remain on scholar ship but will not piay.
