Abortion, war upset readers Lincoln United Way not affiliated with Planned Parenthood The letter to the editor by Ken Linscott (DN, Jan. 16) regarding contraception, abortion and the Uni versity of Ncbraska-Lincoln’s posi tion on condom dispensers in resi dence halls may leave the mistaken impression that Planned Parenthood is financed by Lincoln’s United Way. Quite apart from personal convic tions, biases and inclinations con cerning these complex moral issues, I would like to point out, for the record only, that Planned Parenthood is not affiliated with our United Way. Per haps the author has in mind some other community whose Planned Parenthood chapter is financed by its local United Way, but such is not the case in Lincoln; or perhaps the author has misinterpreted the annual com bined campaign for health and human services among UNL’s faculty and staff (through which university per sonnel may choose to contribute to United Way and its agencies, or to Planned Parenthood, or to other or ganizations, ail listed on one pledge form) . Peter Walcott president United Way of Lincoln and Lancaster County Warm U.S.: Operation Baby Kiil in second decade The gulf war (Operation Desert Storm) has started, and those opposed to using military force to stop a ruth less aggressor have taken to the streets demanding immediate peace in a region on the other side of the world. But there has been a war in our own coun try that has lasted 18 years and shows no signs of stopping. This is the Womb War (Operation Baby Kill), and since its formal declaration on Jan. 22,1973, the body count has exceeded 26 mil lion. In the gulf war, journalists risk their lives to bring instantaneous reporting of the destruction in Iraq, and they regard statements from coa lition military commanders with high skepticism. In the Womb War, evi dence of the human slaughter is ig nored, and the press releases from its commanders (Planned Parenthood and the Nation Abortion Rights Action League) are repeated without ques tion. Those who protest Operation Des ert Storm close down public build ings, assault police, bum American flags and are promptly glorified by the popular media. We who oppose Operation Baby Kill pray in front of abortion clinics and are condemned by the media as terrorists. Those who protest Operation Des ert Storm say that human life is too important to be sacrificed for cheap fuel. But supporters of Operation Baby Kill do not believe that a baby’s life is too high a price to pay for the guaran tee of carefree recreational sex. Those who protest Operation Desert Storm shout, “No Blood for Oil!” We who oppose Operation Baby Kill say, “No Blood for Orgasms.” Those who protest Operation Des ert St orm say that the gulf war will expand beyond anyone’s ability to foresee. We who oppose Operation Baby Kill know- that if the most inno cent and defenseless of humanity can be arbitrarily classified as subhuman and killed with impunity, who will be next? No one is safe. Thanks to Operation Baby Kill, a child is murdered by abortion every 20 seconds. One child out of every four conceived ends up in a garbage dumpster behind an abortion clinic. Thanks to Operation Baby Kill, a child in the mother’s womb has less of a chance of survival than a soldier in Saudi Arabia. The Nebraska Walk For Life be gins at the State Capitol on Sat., Jan. 26 at 10 a.m. Join the opposition to Operation Baby Kill. We can’t ex pect peace around the world if we wage war on our own children. Jerry Kreps senior math War in gulf not repeat of Vietnam Last night, I was shocked to turn on Cable News Network and be greeted by the sounds of anti-aircraft tracer bullets and bombs exploding in Baghdad. My immediate reaction was fear and tears rolled down my face as I realized that my generation’s war had begun. But slowly, I became relieved because I knew that this war would not be another Vietnam. We are not fighting with our hands tied. We are using all our high-tech military weap onry to suppress Saddam Hussein. So as far as the war in the gulf is concerned, it will not be another Vietnam War. However, it might soon become the Vietnam conflict here at home. Surprisingly enough the events tliat occurred last night that upset me the most were all the anti-war demon strations, not the fighting in the Per sian Gulf. Will we never learn by our past mistakes? Wake up people and face reality! We are at war! You can rally all you want, but. no amount of yelling and chanting to ward government buildings or on roadways is going to stop the war. Saddam Hussein is on a crazy power trip like Hitler was, and if we don’t stop him now who knows what he’li try next? Don’t get me wrong, I myself am a big supporter of peace and I feel that war is the easy way out. But I also don’t want us to now repeat mistakes made during Vietnam, so here is what I propose to all you peace-lovers out there: Let s stop rallying against war and let’s instead pray for our service men and women to return home soon and with few casualties. Let’s defeat Saddam and not fight a war at home as we did in the ’60s. Above all, let’s all support our servicemen and women and let them know we are behind them. The last thing they need is to come home to hatred and insults. Let's greet them with victory parades, hugs and cheers of joy. Then after it’s all over — whether that be in a couple of weeks or years — let’s take diplo matic steps to finally ensure that there will never be another war again. Unfortunately, Pedersen displays just such ignorance and preju dice in her column on Jan. 14. The Confederate flag is not the emblem of white supremacists. As Southerners, we are deeply offended by this characterization of the flag. The majority of Southerners are not racist, and we object to the persis tent negative bias that depicts us as ignorant bigots. We are as sickened by the actions of Neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups (many of which are headquartered in the Midwest and the Northwest, not the South) as any Northerner. The Confederate flag is a symbol of honor, of pride in the South, and it is incorporated into more than one of our state flags. Pedersen was in error when she classed the display of the flag with Jew-bashing and black-bash ing. The insult to the Confederate flag is felt especially keenly right now, falling so closely to a day that is very dear to the heart of many Southern ers. Jan. 19 was the birth date of Gen. Robert E. Lee, and it is a day of celebrating the South and the virtues that we so value: honor, devotion to duty and courage. The Confederate flag symbolizes these qualities.
