Changes discussed Complaints keep week lively By Tabitna Hiner Staff Reporter Dead Week may not be as dead as some students think, but student and university officials disagree as to whether something should be done about it. Stacy Mohling, first vice presi dent of ASUN, said that most stu dents assume that new material can’t be introduced during the week. Complaints often arrive at the As sociation of Students at the Univer sity of Nebraska concerning this and other matters exempt from the policy. “A lot of students think you can’t have a quiz during the week,” Mohling said. “However, a quiz doesn’t take up a lot of a student’s time.” The Dead Week policy states that final exams are to be given during the regularly scheduled time or another time during finals week that is agreeable to everyone in the class; that the only exams during Dead Week are laboratory practi cal, make-up, repeat or self-paced exams; and that projects, papers and speeches scheduled for com pletion during Dead Week must have been assigned in writing by the end of the eighth week of the semester. “The (Dead Week) policy isn’t there to keep professors from fin - ishing," she said. “It’s just meant to reduce stress.” Complaints about a professor violating the Dead Week policy can be taken to Mohling who then invest igat.es to see if there has been a violation. As of Tuesday, 10 complaints had been reported to the ASUN office. The appeal system does work, but Dead Week policy needs to be changed, Mohling said. The biggest flaw in the policy is that it doesn’t carry over to finals week, Mohling said. While the in fringement upon students’ finals time has not been a problem this semester, Mohling said it was a dilemma last spring. Mohling said the issues of new material and carry-over to finals week should be addressed. See DEAD on 11 Big Holiday Savings For Your Entire Family! Men's. Women's. Kids'.
