[Strange dreams 1 [break connection tThey were both big and dressed n black. I slowed down but their >ace did not change. They were leaded straight for me. I figured I could try to run, but hey would gel me sooner or later, halted and moved to the edge of he sidewalk. They walked right past, sud lenly bursting into conversation a ew paces later. I turned to watch hem, my heart still on overdrive. I frowned, turned back around nd saw Mary and Karen at the far of the park. ♦ * ♦ * * “Where’ve you two been?” They laughed, of course. “What's 0 or 20 minutes among friends?” “More like 30. You wouldn’t Deiieve what just happened. These two guys walked by. You guys were late and I thought they had gotten you and had come after me.” “That’s quite a story/. About like my dreams last night.” Karen looked up, her eyes twice their usual size. “You know, I had some weird dreams too. There was this one guy bent over me and cutting on my head and I couldn’t move or anything.” “No way! Mine was like that." I watched Mary as she continued. "It was like it went on forever, with all these lights and I was stuck.” I wasn’t sure whether they were | putting me on or not. !t was iike I something out of a bad serialized f story. “You two are too much. I suppose there was a hunch-backed assistant named Igor there for both of you.” Mary gave me a little push and said, “Come on Drake, this is seri ous. It was scary." I hadn’t noticed that we had been walking around the park. We kept walking, each of us looking straight ahead. I had a vague notion, but it. was too far. They would only laugh if I brought it up. Three kids ran in through one of the gates and tumbled in the leaves on the ground, playing a weird combination of “tag” and “doctor.” They must have been about 5 years old. A young woman entered a few minutes later. She watched them, then sat on a bench and opened a book. She might have been a mother, a guardian or a stranger. The kids did not seem to notice us. ♦ * * ♦ * We continued walking, saying nothing. I started to talk a couple of times but didn’t get it out. Mary glanced at me once, then looked away. I started thinking about my work at home and wondered what we were doing. The kids were stuffing handfuls or leaves down each other’s shirts. "Look, I’ve got to say some thing. This is kind of weird, but we’ve been through some weird stuff lately.” We rounded a corner and I went on. “This is weird, but. . ..” I look an audible breath. “Have you guys tried any mental links since yester day?” They both looked at me and said they had not. Karen got a worried look. "i was kind of won dering something myself.” She didn’t finish, so I kept going. “What if they took out the boost ers?” ♦ ♦ * t • We didn’t want to talk by the woman with the book, so we sat in thegrass and hoped the kids would not come by. “Let’s try again. We can use those kids over there as a trigger.” “How about just one of them, that girl with the sweater?” "All right.” • * * * t 1 looked down at (he grass be tween my feet, then back to the little girl, who was hitting one of her male companions on the head with a weed while he laughed I tried to focus on her and use that as an image to bring the three of us together mentally. After a few minutes, I looked at Karen and Mary. They were looking at me. “It’s no use, Drake. It isn’t work ing.” The craziness of my idea no longer mattered and I was getting tired of the whole thing. “OK, let’s say the company took their boost ers out. Your heads seem all right now?” Both nodded assent. “I didn’t have a dream like you guys did, but they might have gotten me also. We can’t tell without anyone for me to contact.” “We could try again, but I don’t think we’d get anything. We need to do something. We’ve got to end this soon.” PcCcrson is a senior psychology and philosophy major and a Daily Nebras kan Arts and Entertainment reporter and a columnist.
