Owens scores 12 for NU By Cory Golden Staff Reporter Double zero pul up bigger num bers Tuesday despite running on empty. Junior forward Daprcis Owens scored 12’points and grabbed four rebounds in Nebraska’s 92-71 victory over the Czechoslovakian nationals — but it wasn’t easy. “My legskindofgavcoutonmcin the first half,” said Owens, a victim of coach Danny Nee’s intensified run ning drills. “A lot of people arc in good shape because of it, though,” Owens said. “I think it’ll help us in the back-to-back games in San Juan and when the Big Eight games come.” Nee noted Owens’ performance after the game. “I thought Daprcis Owens played well,” he said. “He’s working very hard.” Owens, a starter in 11 games in 1989-90, averaged 8.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per game last year and has picked up where he left ofl because of increased confidence, he said. Against High Five America, he scored nine points and six rebounds. “I’m much more comfortable this year,” he said. “I’m relaxed when I start; I don’t worry about going in then getting taken back out right away. I can just go out and do what I have to do.” He’s also seemingly more relaxed at the frec-throw line: a career 59 pcrccnt frec-throw shooter, Owens has sunk 5 of 6 attempts this prcsca son. From the floor, he has hit 8 of 13 shots. Owens said he was happy with his performance against the “really physi cal” Czech team but needs to improve his rebounding and inside post moves. “I thought I did OK tonight run ning the floor, rebounding and help ing other people,” he said. He was whistled with one of the game’s many travelling calls as he caught a pass in the first half. “It was questionable,” he said. “Most of them were questionable.” One of the officials was Czecho slovakian, and all three were sanc tioned by the Federation of Interna tional Basketball of Munich. “1 guess they just have a different style of rcfllng overseas,” Owens said.
