Husker Bob stirs crowd at NU games
By Erik Unger
Staff Reporter
Take a die-hard sports fan, add a
man who loves to dance and multi
ply by 14 years of dedicated service
to the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
The result is “Husker Bob”.
Bob Rowe became I Iusker Bob
in 1976 by accident.
While sitting in the south sta
dium bleachers, Howe became upset
with the passivity of the fans in the
area and “felt like leading cheers,”
he said.
He jumped the fence and started
walking through the east side of
the stadium, trying to get the crowd
involved in cheers.
He’s been a mainstay at Husker
games ever since.

and even excites the fans of the

But the students are what I lusker

Bob enjoys the most. It was the
students, after all, who gave Rowe
his nickname.
“I love the students,” he said.
“They have been great to me.
Rowe does have a life outside ol
Huskerland. The 70-year-old is the
“mayor” of the Lincoln I rade Cen
ter, a group of 42 different offices
just outside of Lincoln, where he
works on the grounds.

Big Red clothes vary by fan
By Julie Naught on
Senior Reporter
If it’s weird, polyester and red,
you can bet that a Cornhusker fan
will be wearing it.
Choices of clothing at Big Red
games range from the nice, normal
sweatshirt that you could pick up
at the University Bookstore or the
Nebraska Bookstore for about $20
to $40, to the super-high-quality
red polyester shirt available at the
Salvation Army or Junior League
Thrift Shop for $ 1.50.
Your choice.
Your choices probably w ill reach
far beyond your budget. Big red
wear is available at just about every
store in town, but fan wear is as
diverse as the fans who wear the
clothing
jeans and be off to the game.
The rabid fan could adorn this
ensemble with a Husker-red visor
and slap an “On the eighth day,
God created the l Iuskers” bumper
sticker ($1.25) on his or her Husker
red car, and be off to the game in
style.
I f you ’re doing you r shoppi ng a t
the University Bookstore, you might
choose a bright 1 Iusker-red sweat
shirt with the University of Ne
braska logo ($24.95) or a brand
spanking-new white T-shirt that
says “Nebraska’’ —complete with a
picture of I lerbic I lusker ($15.95)
Rabid fans, grab a white cotton
afghan with I lerbic I lusker ($29 95)
to sit on, and add a red Nebraska
cotton tw ill cap (S9.95). If you’re of
the mood, add a pair of Herbie
Husker earrings (S4.95) or a Corn
husker pin ($3 25), and you’re off
to the game.
Most of the stale has a real pas
sion for football and feels the need
to dress accordingly But some fans
are more rabid than others. There
are Rabid Husker Fans, Husker
Fans- on-a-Budget, Unique I lusker
Fans, Greek Husker Fans and Col
lege Husker Fans, to name just a
few.
The Nebraska Bookstore, 13th
and Q streets, and the University
Bookstore, in the Fast Campus
Union and the basement of the
Nebraska Union, are good places
to visit if you’re after the college or
the rabid look
Choices at Nebraska Bookstore
range from an XXL gray Russell
FRO cotton sweatshirt with a red
Nebraska logo across the chest
($42.95) to a Husker Blackshirts
sweatshirt in ever-fashionable black
($17.95). Those after the college
look would add this top to a pair of
• or me iiusKer-t an-on-a-nudget
and the Unique Huskcr Fan, the
Salvation Army, the Veterans Thrift
Shop and the Junior League Thrift
Shop offer one-of-a-kind choices.
Goodwill is sporting a land’s
Knd red cotton dress, yours for
only $14.99 Or you could go for
those red-and-white striped over
alls — practically guaranteed to be
the only ones at the game — avail
able for just .$7.99. Top the whole
ensemble off w ith a one-of-a-kind
cotton bag from the Velerans’Thrift
Store (49 cents) and you’re ready
for Husker greatness.
Of course, if you’re not into this
red-wearing mania, don’t despair.
You could always wear orange and
black on Saturday (but don’t be
su rpriscd if someone throw's some
thing at you.)
