Hartkc graduates, goes off to war and eventually becomes a lead ing spokesman for the Vietnam War effort and a master of the hocus pocus which his experience in this supposed police action is so much about. At one point, Hartke talks about his Vietnam experience and how his life during that war was something of a charade. “In Vietnam ... I really was the mastermind. Yes, and that still bothers me. During my last year there, when my ammunition was lan guage instead of bullets, I invented justifications for all the killing and dying we were doing which impressed even me! I was a genius of lethal hocus pocus!” After the war, Hartkc is hired by the now retired recruiting officer that once plucked him out of the science lair and into the service to leach at an expensive college for the learning disabled. Tarkington College special izes in illiterate rich kids who have been rejected by most other universi ties in the Western hemisphere. Hartkc becomes the the most popular in structor, teaching physics and spend ing a great deal of lime sleeping with many of the female staff members, including the college president’s wife. One of the biggest “booby traps” Fate has set for Hartkc — and there arc many in the story of his life — was a “pretty and personable young woman named Margaret Patton, who allowed (Hartke) to woo and marry her,” soon after his graduation from West Point. She then allowed Hartke to father two children without telling him that, “there was a powerful strain of insanity on her mother s side of the family.” Hartke then goes on to say: “Our children ... can never forgive us for reproducing. What a mess.” After some brief unpleasantries Hartke goes on to teach at an all black prison across from Tarkington Col ics6 a college owned by Japanese investors — where he settles down to record his life story and also, conse quently , to become a witness and then later an accused aider of the largest prison break in United States history. Vonnegut is a profound pessimist who clings to shreds of hope concern ing Americans as well as the world in which we live. The America of “Hocus Pocus” is ugly; foreign investors, mainly from Japan, arc buying every thing in sight. And Americans are more than happy to make that extra buck, but at what cost to our countries welfare? This question as well as the condition of the nation’s corporate and political leadership is examined. The cumulative power of “Hocus Pocus” is considerable. Vonnegut creates a story of intrigue and, more importantly, a story with purpose. His observations are candid and re vealing. His beliefs are cast through the characters he creates, leaving us to believe that statements from Hartke, such as: “I have to wonder, too, in light of my own experiences in pub lic-relations hocus pocus and the recent history of my Government, if there weren’t a lot of people back in 1922 who could put 2 and 2 together as easily as I have now,” are much greater statements from a person who knows what he is taking about, and is trying to beat it into our thick skulls. York said Bernstein “felt the music as it was played; he played the piece with his body as well as the orchestra.” Among such well-known Bern stein pieces as “West Side Story,” the film score to “On the Water front” and the ballet “Fancy Free,” York included “Chichester Psalm” as his favorite Bernstein pieces. “Chichester Psalm” is Bernstein’s setting of various Psalms to music. The Psalms arc sung in Hebrew and include the 23rd and 100th Psalms, according to York. York added that Bernstein was known as a lecturer, teacher and performer, as well as a composer and conductor. “He gave other conductors the go-ahead, that it is okay to be an American and a conductor,” York said.
