Vocalist concentrates
on listeners, not self

If everybody “sold out” this well,
there would be no use for the term.
J Ex-Black Flag vocalist and inde
pendent cult hero Henry Rollins
has signed on a major label. Shock.
Silence.
Wartime is a dual effort by
Rollins and bassist Andrew Weiss,
both who belong to the Rollins
Band.
Unlike the Rollins Band’s
hardcore scream assault, Wartime
exists more in the industrial mold.
Danccablc, dissonant and fronted
by the conversational Rollins, the
EP “Fast Food For Thoujght” con
jures images of turmoil in a post
modern world.
Rollins, who historically is fas
cinated with his introverted self,
manages to talk out more, focusing

on the listeners rather than his own
redundancies as a thick-necked
psycho singer/poet/starving artist.
The production is solid, not
major-label slick, and the mix of
simple instruments, primarily over
driven bass and drums, is pound
ing.
On “The Whole Truth,” Rollins
pumps out intellect like “Hello.
Say what. Oh yeah. Too much.
What’s new? What’s up? I hear
you’re ... messed up.”
But whether this is enlightening
is beside the point. Rollins nears
rap here, and the groove he falls
into is infectious. And he is talking
to YOU, the listener, not about
himself, a miracle in itself.
Other Wartime features Ted
Nugent sampling and other assorted
oddities. “Right To Life” is an in
tense little bouncer in which Rollins
starts leaning back toward Rollins
Band hollering again, but effec
tively.
Wartime should sit OK with
traditional Rollins fans, and turn
on a few unfamiliar with him. This
effort has the potential to open new
doors for Rollins’ creativity, in
cluding those on dance clubs. Rollins
has been drowning in stale ideas
for a couple of years, but “Fast
Food” shows new things brewing
in the old cranium.

art that could pass as a photograph.
He compared modem artists of this
type, such as Joseph Bama, to artists
that had painted years before, some
times hundreds of years before.
Nelson showed a number of works
by Frederic Remington and artists
that have imitated Remington. He
said Remington’s followers use a great
deal of detail in their art. He also
showed works by Charlie Russell,
such as “St. Charlie, as far as Montan

ans are concerned.” Russell’s art has
been an inspiration to a number of
artists from Montana, Nelson said.
The slides also showed art by Ameri
can Indian artists.
Nelson drew his slide examples
from the University of Nebraska
Lincoln’s Chrisllicb Collection. The
art collection also is referred to as the
Great Plains Art Collection and is
contained in the second floor of Love
Memorial Library. Nelson is the cu
rator of the collection.
Nelson’s talk was part of the Cen
ter for Great Plains Studies’ Seminar
Scries. The next seminar will be Nov.
14, when a panel will speak on the
oconomic/cultural survival on the Great
Plains.
