“Petrouchka” opens at the Butter
Week Fair in St.Petersburg, Russia,
in 1830. It tells the story of animated
dolls - Petrouchka, the ballerina and
the Moor - that perform at the fair.
Petrouchka is featured.
Petrouchka tries to impress the
ballerina, who he is in love with, and
is jealous of the Moor. The ballerina
is in love with the Moor, and the
showman that is in charge of the dolls
is sadistic and doesn’t care much about
any of them. He particularly hates
Petrouchka. The tragic ending of these
plot twists makes for an entertaining
ballet.
The dancers that performed as the
animated dolls were particularly ef
fective. Min Hua Zhao, as Petrouchka,
danced with a fire and spirit that was
convincing as a doll coming alive.
The ballerina doll, danced by Andrea
Boardman, and the Moor, danced by
Louis Robitaille, did an excellent job
of 1 irst evoking admiration, then awe,
then anger, and finally, sympathy.
A beautiful touch of “Petrouchka”
was the silvery stardust substance that
floated from the ceiling during the
fourth movement. The substance
seemed to cover the dancers, making
them look like they were dancing
from behind a transparent silver cur
tain. The effect was magical.
Overall, the talent of the dancers
of Les Grandes Ballets Canadiens
made for an enjoyable evening at the
ballet.
Dictionary

he a good move.
But the dictionary ultimately shoots
itself in the leg with too many glib
one-liners like “study habits” (“What
nuns wear to class”) and “grant”
(“The answer to the question, ‘Who
was buried in Grant’s tomb?”’).
Like any parody, the dictionary
will lind an audience. There arc proba
bly many gullible students who will
spend money they could use on other
things to buy this book. Maybe they’ll
even enjoy it - for all of the 20
minutes it lakes to skim through its 91
pages.
After all, spending time away with
the dictionary may in fact be helpful
in preventing mono: “What you might
catch if you study too hard.”

Weil pointed out that the one
thing both of these points of view
have is the fact that they both rec
ognize the importance and power
of art.
‘‘For neither Keynes nor Lu
nacharsky is art merely decorative
or diverting or simply an elite form
of entertainment,” Weil said.
‘‘They each approach art as if it
were, rather, an elemental force,
something almost akin to fire.”
During his speech Weil noted
several court cases involving cen
sorship, including a University of
Nebraska case involving the show
ing of the film ‘‘Hail Mary.”

During a question and answer
period following the lecture, one
member of the audience stood up
and told Weil that Nebraskans would
not be “hoodwinked” by a repre
sentative of the Eastern art estab
lishment.
She then began a graphic de
scription of the Mapplethorpe
photographs which have received
national attention in the trial of a
Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center
director w ho displayed them.
Some members of the audience
applauded the woman’s opposition
to obscene art but others supported
Weil’s anti-censorship stance.
After a recent visit to Eastern
Europe, Weil said, he realized how
important not only the right to speak
freely was but also the right to hear
a viewpoint than the official one
offered by the stale.
‘‘Unless we arc prepared,
promptly and vigorously, to pro
tect the art that we hate,” he said,
“Then it cannot be too long there
after that we may find ourselves
faced with the loss of the art that
we most deeply cherish.”
