Museum official to discuss art, law, censorship tonight By Sean Green Staff Reporter Stephen Weil, deputy director of the Smithsonian Institution’s Hirshhom Museum and Sculpture Garden, will give the word on censorship tonight at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery auditorium. Weil’s 7 p.m. public lecture, entitled “Now you See It, Now You Don’t: Censorship, Academic Freedom and the Visual Arts,” will address censorship, the art museum’s role in society and the issue of First Amendment rights. A question and answer period will follow the lecture. Before he was deputy director at the Hirshhom, Weil was admin istrator at the Whitney Museum of American Art. He graduated from Brown University in 1949. Weil has written extensively on museums, art and the law. He co wrote “Art Law: Rights and Lia bilities of Creators and Collectors,” which received the 1987 SCRIBES Award as the best law book pub lished the previous year. Weil’s visit and lecture is being sponsored by the Collectors’ Fo rum of the Nebraska Art Associa tion with additional support of the Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Humanities Council. Sheldon Director George Ncu bert said a visit at this time by someone of Weil’s stature and knowledge was very fortunate. “With current cultural issues and debate regarding First Amend ment rights and the National En dowment for the Arts, his trip to Lincoln is timely and should pro vide an important insight into the topic of censorship,” Neubcrt said.
