Wyoming coach Mike English said he feels stopping Shannon is the key to winning the match. Coach: Balance is Cowgirls’ strength By John Adkisson Staff Reporter Wyoming volleyball coach Mike English will be bringing his team to Lincoln this weekend to show off~ and hopefully upset top-rated Nebraska in the process. The Cowgirls, 4-1 and ranked 20th by Volleyball Monthly Magazine, will be in town tonight and Saturday for the Baden-Mizuno Invi tational, which also includes Nebraska, Texas A&M and Purdue. Wyoming has three Nebraska high school graduates on its roster, and English said that his team is looking forward to playing the Huskcrs in the final game of the tournament Satur day night. “We’re going to come and show off our girls in front of their family and friends. They’re really excited about coming down there,’’ English said. Kim Smith from Lincoln East, Stacey Cudaback from Exeter, and Krista Bashaw from Kimball all have seen playing umc for Wyoming this season, and English said his “Ne braska contingent" has played a major role in Wyoming’s carly-season sue cess. “All of our Nebraska girls are playing really well, especially Stacey (Cudaback). She’s twice as good as she was this time last year,’ ’ English said. Senior outside hitter Erin Conta cessi and sopLnnore outside hitter Tyree Lcuthauser have been pleasant surprises for English thus far. 4 4 Both of those girls have come on strong for us early in the season,’’ English said. Wyoming won their own Baden Invitational this season, and its lone loss came to 16-ranked Louisiana State at home in five sets. English said the strength of his team is balance. “We’re not soft at any spot on the court, and we’re really deep,’’ Eng lish said. “But on the same token, we’re not world-beaters anywhere cither.’’ Wyoming finished last year with a 24-7 record, won the High Country Athletic Conference championship and advanced to the final eight in the NCAA tournament. English said it will be hard for this year’s team to match the success of last year. Playing top teams is a task Wyo ming is used to. Last season, the Cowgirls were 9-4 against top 20 opponents. English said his team seems to rise up against top-notch competi tion. “We’ve traditionally seemed to play our best games of the season when we’ve needed to,” English said. English said he is impressed with Nebraska, especially the size and athletic ability the Huskers possess. “I think Terry’s (Nebraska Coach Pettit) had a number of good teams there over the years, but he’s cer tainly got a dominant one this year,” English said. English said stopping Nebraska outside hitter Eileen Shannon will be the key to the match on Saturday. Upsetting the Huskers would be a tremendous boost for Wyoming vol leyball, according to English. When it comes to rankings, English said he doesn’t really care. “It doesn’t really matter much who’srated where,” he said. “We’ve just got to go out and play our brand of volley bail.” U"c°l" 61 TV “ SATURDAY 11 A.M.
