Coach plans passing game By Todd Cooper Staff Reporter Although last year’s tie with the Nebraska junior varsity football team brought recognition to his team, Snow (Utah) Junior College coach Paul Tidwell wasn’t satisfied. “We expected to play well and we felt real good about the way we played last year,” Tidwell said. “But we certainly weren’t satisfied. “We had the opportunity to win on the field goal at the end of the game but we missed it.” Instead, the score ended up dead locked at 23. It was one of two ties Snow had during 1989, leaving them at 6-3-2. Nebraska and Snow meet today at 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. Univer sity of Nebraska-Lincoln student showing their student identification cards get in free. “It’s a big game, good national recognition,” Tidwell said. “It’s a chance for us to open up some eyes, we want to get off on the right start. ’ ’ Eleven returning starters return to lead what Tidwell considers to be a young team this season. “Right now we’re young over all,” he said. ‘‘We lost more defen sive players than offensive, so I don’t know how we’re going to be tested. The kids are ready to hit someone else besides their teammates. In fact, Tidwell expects plenty of hitting today. “I expect it to be a hard-hitting, very aggressive game, (but) I also expect our players to come out healthy -4 4 It’s a big game, good national recognition. Leading the attack on defense against the Huskers will be strong safety Marc Decol and defensive end Stephen Filiaga, Tidwell said. He said he is most concerned with stopping Nebraska’s option play. “We watched the game against Baylor the other night,” he said. “It was clear that we’re going to have to stop the toss on the option. “Our overall key is to stop the Nebraska offense from making big plays. We’ve got to play hard and aggressively.” Snow’s offense is similar to Brigham Young’s. ‘ We’re kind of patterned after them,” he said. “We use a lot of motion, a lot of shifting. There’s a lot of pre-snap reads. An offense similar to BYU’s also means a lot of passing. “It’s no secret, we have to take advantage of the passing game,” Tidwell said. Tidwell expects sophomore quar terback Bret Barbcn to lead Snow in his first start. “We have a couple of good pas sers,” he said. “Barben throws the ball well, (but) this is his first start.” Barben’s primary target when pass ing will be sophomore wide receiver Colin McGomgle. When running it will be halfback Duncan Boyd. “We should have a good game and good years from those guys,” Tidwell said.
