Victory prepares NU volleyball team for Hawaiian trip By Benji Greenberg Staff Reporter The second-ranked Nebraska vol leyball team prepared for its trip to Hawaii where it will play three top 10 teams by defeating the University of Nebraska at Omaha, ranked ninth in NCAA Division II, Saturday at the NU Coliseum. Nebraska swept UNO 15-3, 15-8 and 15-12 before about 3,000 fans. The team is in Honolulu preparing to meet top-ranked UCLA, third ranked Hawaii and seventh ranked Ohio State in the Wahine Invitational that starts Thursday. The rankings are according to Volleyball Monthly magazine’s preseason poll. “The UNO game was a good test for us and it got us prepared to play in Hawaii this weekend,’’ said assistant coach John Cook. Against UNO, Nebraska started off fast as it went on a 10-0 spurt to break a 2-2 tic, blowing the first game wide open and winning 15-3. Junior Chris Hall and sophomore Eileen Shannon contributed six and three kills in that game. Shannon also added three blocks. In die second game, Nebraska exploded to an 8-1 lead before the Lady Mavs calmed down and made it close. Comhuskcr senior Linda Barsness ended UNO’s rally with three kills to preserve the 15-8 win. Barsness also ended the third game with a kill, after Nebraska trailed most of the game before going on an 8-0 run. For the match, Nebraska was paced by Hall and Shannon who finished with 11 and 10 kills respectively. Senior setter Val Novak contributed 42 set assists and had four service aces. Junior Janet Kruse had eight kills, junior Sara Hesch four kills, Barsness eight kills and sophomore Stephanie Thaler seven kills and four 1 blocks. | Cook believes the Hawaii trip will be a good lest this early in the season. “ There ’ s real I y no pressure on you this early in the season and it will test ' our strengths and weaknesses,’ ’ Cook Seniors Bolii, Novak elected as Husker volleyball team captains By Benji Greenberg Staff Reporter Seniors Becky Bolli and Val No vak were elected by their teammates i as captains for this year’s volleyball team. “I’m excited by being elected captain because it’s a different role than I’ve had,” said Novak, a return ing All-American setter from last season’s national runner-up team. “It has different rcsponsiblitics.” Bolli, who came to Nebraska as a walk-on, has primarily been used as a serving specialist. “I’m excited because 1 was elected by teammates and this shows that I 'm respected,’’ Bolli said.’’I consider this a real honor, and I welcome the pres sure of this added responsibilty.’’ 1 Nebraska opened its 1990 season with a victory over University of Clark probable starter for Colts INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Former Nebraska I-back Ken Clark wasn’t worried about making the Indianapo lis Colls’ final 47-man rosier, but he didn’t expect to become a starter so soon. Coach Ron Meyer penciled in the rookie 5-foot-9,201 -pound Clark as a probable starter for Sunday’s open ing game against Buffalo. “It was kind of a shock to me,” said Clark, an eighth-round draft pick. ‘ ‘ I didn t think my last game was very | good. Research by John Arenberg, sports information coordinator at Millikin University, showed that Nebraska had 11 student-athletes honored. Next in the university division was the Uni versity of Georgia with six honorees. Eight universities had four selections. Nebraska’s academic All-Ameri cans last year included five first-team selections in Gerry Gdowski and Jake Young, football; Jill Rishel, softball; Virginia Stahr, volieyball; and Mark Warburton, gymnastics.
