Brian Shellito/Daily Nebraskan j Door is open for 3 hopetuls wing for fullback position By Benji Greenberg Staff Reporter_ Experience is not a factor when considering the challengers for Ne braska’s No. 1 fullback position. With the loss of 1989 seniors Bryan Carpenter, a two-year starter, and Sam Schmidt, his backup, the position is open for 5-foot 10, 215-pound Tim Johnk; 5-11, 220-pound Omar Soto; and 5-11,205 pound Andre MeDuffy. Frank Solich, NU running backs coach, said there is talent at the posi tion. He said he is not concerned with the inexperience because all arc good athletes and all “arc capable of being a strong threat to any opponent.’’ The fullback with the most game experience -- sophomore Lance Lewis - is questionable because of the same neck injury that sidelined him all last season. Lewis, who played for the varsity as a true freshman last year, had surgery on his neck last year. The surgery removed a calcium deposit in his spinal cord, an injury similar to one he suffered in high school. MeDuffy, a junior from Euless, Texas, moved from 1-back to full back this season. He moved for more depth, and because it was thought it would in crease his chance of getting more playing time, Solich and Coach Tom Osborne said. McDuffy was recruited as a full back, but switched last season to 1 back after injuries to Terry Rodgers, George Achola and Lamont White. Solich said Vince Hawkins, a 6-2, 215-pound scholarship player Irom Spokane Falls (Wash.) Community College, also could contribute. Mickey Joseph and Mike Grant, the challengers for the top quarter back spot to replace 1989 senior Gerry Gdowski, said they were confident with the field of fullbacks. “I’m thankful to have such tal ented fullbacks because they (it well into our offensive scheme,” Grant said. ‘‘They block, pass catch and read defenses well, and 1 feel pretty comfortable about handing the ball off to any one of them.” After red shirting last season. Solo, from Miami by way of Western Ari zona Junior College, thinks he is ready to play at this level. “The year off helped me to get adjusted to Division 1 football be cause it’s a much faster game and you must be prepared to play,’ ’ Solo said. “I’m confident with the offensive system here because ilcomplcmcntcd our offense in junior college, and l feel comfortable and adjusted to it. “We’re a deeply talented football team and I feel we’re ready to start off on a succcsslul 1990 campaign.” Two Cornhuskers to share position as No. 1 tight end " Matt Herek Staff Reporter The Cornhuskers’ No. 1 tight end position will be shared by a pair of good ol’ boys from Texas. Nebraska re ceivers coach Ron Brown said rc dshirt sophomore William Wash ington of Tyler, Texas, and junior Chris Garrett of Snyder, Texas, Garrett will be used “in terchangeably” this season. The two arc used to splitting time, as both shared tight end duties with Monte Kratzenstcin who used up his collegiate eligibility in 1989. Washington, who was named to the United Press International's All Big Eight team withoutcatchinga pass, said he plans to catch some this season. The 6-foot-2 245-poundcr said Washington he wants to be more than a one dimensional player who only blocks. His goal is to be an all-around tight end who blocks and receives well. During the off-season, Washing ton said, he primarily concentrated on receiving. He caught passes every ^ day, working on tight end pass routes, I he said. ‘‘I personally believe my role as a blocker is in the past,” Washington said. No pass receptions in 11 games gave Washington negative thoughts as well as a loss of confidence in his ability to catch them. But Washington said he spent the off-season trying to prove to himsell that he could catch. “I’m my biggest critic," he said. . "I’m never satisfied with what I do.” He is seeing the ball better, he said, especially when it leaves the quarterback’s hands. Both Washington and Garrett agree that they arc competitive and both said they want to get a lot of playing time. Garrett not on ly caught passes, but also scored touchdowns. 01 his five catches in 1989, four resulted in touch downs. He ended with 96 yards re ceiving, for an average of 19.2 yards a catch. The 6-3, 240 pounder said the ro tation system won’t bother him "as long as 1 gel to play." |HS Welcome Back Pardners to ■ The Watering Hole Two special events plus our regular Tuesday & Thursday specials Every Thursday.Paul Phillips ffijjj® • Friday, August 24th.Bobby Curious ■HU • Every Tuesday.25< Draws J Wednesday , August 29th.Poverty Hill Band \ Hi321 "O" St 438-3054
