Officials must revise policy before Lied can serve alcohol By Cindy Wostrel Staff Reporter Lied Center for Performing Arts officials will have to wait at least a month before breaking out the bubbly during program intermissions. Herb Howe, interim associate to the chancellor, said a group of Uni versity of Nebraska-Lincoln officials must finish revising UNL’s policy on serving alcohol before officials from the Lied Center can apply to serve champagne or wine. The NU Board of Regents expanded its alcohol policy this summer to al low individual campuses to decide when to allow alcohol to be served on campus, shifting responsibility for choosing when and where alcohol may be served from the board to uni versity chancellors. The old policy permitted serving alcohol on campuses at private events after the chancellor had gained the board’s permission. Joe Rowson, NU director of public affairs, said that before when UNL wanted to serve alcohol, it did not need the approval of the Lincoln City Council because the alcohol was not sold. Richard Wood, NU vice president and general counsel, said Lied Center officials would have to ask for per mission to serve alcohol at specific events rather than asking for a blan ket policy. Rowson said that according to the Nebraska Liquor Control Act, people who wish to sell alcohol occasionally must gain a special permit for special events, which is limited to six times per year. The university could serve alcohol six times under the act, Rowson said, or it could use other vendors to sell the alcohol. Each vendor that the university used could sell alcohol six times per year, so the Lied Center could sell alcohol at more than six events a year. And part of the profits could be given to a designated cause, accord ing to the Board of Regents’ expanded policy. Traditionally, the university has enforced state alcohol laws strictly for private events, Wood said, such as not serving minors. He said that likely would continue under the new policy. Although UNL officials are revis ing the campus policy on alcohol, Howe said, he’s not sure how much the policy will change.
