Kruse’s team earns silver at Olympic Festival By Darran Fowler Senior Editor Nebraska volleyball player Janet Kruse’s collection of U.S. Olympic Festival medals will not include the gold. Kruse, who earned All-America honors as a sophomore for the Com huskers last year, and her West team took the silver medal at this year’s week-long festival in Minneapolis, July 8-15. For Kruse, who will be too old to compete in another festival, this was her final shot at the volleyball gold medal. Last year, Kruse’s team took the bronze. “It’s kind of a bummer,” Kruse said with a laugh. Her team was 3-0 after round-robin play, but lost in four games to the North team in the gold medal match. She said her team was “real ex cited” going into the final match, since it earlier had beaten the North team in straight sets. Teams had six days of two-a-day practices to prepare for the festival. Joining Kruse at this year’s festi val were Comhusker teammates Ei leen Shannon and Stephanie Thaler. Shannon played for the East team, which finished fourth, while Thater played for the bronze-medal South team. Both will be sophomores this fall. All three players filled the left outside position for their respective teams. For Shannon that is her usual spot, but for Kruse, who played the right side on last year’s national run ner-up Nebraska team, and Thater, a middle player, playing the left side was an unfamiliar role. “I prefer the right side,” Kruse said by phone from her home in Fort Calhoun. “It’s nice to play in a tour nament like this and play different positions .... It gives you a different perspective. It’s fun to play a differ ent position once in a while.” When Kruse was matched against cither Shannon or Thater’s team, it was “real competitive,” Kruse said. “It’s hard to explain,” she said. ‘ ‘ We challenged one another, but still we’re teammates so it wasn’t like we were rivals or anything. It was fun, yet competitive, too.” Allhough her team never received a medal, Shannon, who was an All Big Eight selection and picked to the Final Four All-Tournament team, was a force for the East team, Kruse said. “Eileen, every time we played her team she was the one who hurt us,” Kruse said. Kruse added that she was impressed with Thatcr, who played a back-up role to Husker senior middle blockers Virginia Stahr and Carla Baker on last year’s Husker team, especially since she was playing a different position in her first festival. “She really look to it and really played well,” Kruse said. Kruse said she remembered the anxiety she felt at her first festival and this year was different. “I felt in place,” she said. “I was able to just play and not worry about being at the festival.” Kruse said she really didn’t know her stats, but did know that she led the team in digs in two matches. “I felt like I played pretty good,” she said. “I know 1 played belter than last year. There’s always things you wish you would have done different when you look back, but overall I was pretty pleased with my festival tour nament.” ._■ : Special y ‘Vedding & ; Wedding Invitations 25% Off with coupon.; (Please Present Coupon When Ordering) ■ Reception & Party Supplies ■ l Wedding Floral Arrangements l ■ 4005 “O" St. Lincoln 488 0767 ■ ViiiaiiiiiiiiiiiKiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii/ A new you for summer Make your statement with a progressive summer style from the Chop Shop.
