is that it is more economical than the
microwave system. Prior to Feb. 1,
NETV paid American Telephone &
Telegraph Co. for use of their micro
waves. AT&T was increasing its rates,
Stephens said, so it was clear that
some other alternative was needed.
The nine transmitter stations were
equipped with satellite dishes to re
ceive the signal from the satellite,
Spacenet II. Thecostof the hardware,
dishes and rental of the satellite space
for the 1990 fiscal year was $1,119
million, Stephens said.
Multiple Channels are possible
using the satellite, Stephens said.
Several programs can be linked up to
the transponder at once.
NEB*SAT also has made it pos
sible to have a statewide radio signal.
Steve York, an announcer for Ne
braska Public Radio Network, said
prior to NEB*SAT, the signal only
could be received by listeners who
were not far outside of Lincoln.
NEB*SAT allows expansion in a
variety of directions. The new net
working will enhance educational
access, provide in-service professional
and on-site employee training and
help Nebraska’s colleges and univer
sities bring instruction to all parts of
the state.
NEB*SAT was developed by the
Nebraska Educational Telecommu
nications Coordinating and Planning
Group.

Tuck
Continued from Page 1
Tuck’s personal philosophy on
photography involves a lot of
‘‘hands-on’ ’ experience, as well as
plenty of imagination. His travels
to Africa, Japan, Egypt, China and
Europe have given him the experi
ence. And he also taught a photog
raphy class to high school students
at Oxford University.
“Asa photographer, you have
to get inside of people’s mind, you
have to pull out the salient ele
ments. Unless you’re alert and have
a vision, you don’t see it at all,’ ’ he
said.
Tuck sees writing in the same
light as photography.
“You have to let writing con
sume you,’’ he said. “Treat every
story as if you’re writing your last
and constantly try to improve.
“If you rest on your laurels,
you’re as good as dead.’’
