Baseball team earns third
in Big Eight tournament
By Todd Cooper
Staff Reporter
The Nebraska baseball team closed
out its season May 18 with a 42-26
record and a third place finish in ihc
Big Eight tournament in Oklahoma
City.
Nebraska, after a year absence from
the tourney, qualified as one of the
four teams to make the tournament by
winning three of four must-win games
at Iowa State to end the regular sea
son.
Those three victories carried Ne
braska to a third seed in the tourna
ment, where they played No. 2 seed
Kansas State in the first round, win
ning the game 7-5. Doug Tcglmcicr,
7-2, pitched the win, while Dave
Matranga earned the save.
Against top-seed Oklahoma State
in the second round, Nebraska was
one of few teams in postseason play
to give the Cowboys all they could
handle in a 3-2 defeat.
With two outs in the bottom of the
ninth inning and Gary Tackett on
second, junior third baseman Bill Vosik
singled to left field. Tackett was waved
home by Comhusker coach John
Sanders on the hit but was thrown out
at the plate to end the game.
Freshman pitcher Josh Bullock, 5
4, gave up five hits to the Cowboys,
who went on to win the tournament
and advanced to the College World
Series at Omaha’s Rosenblatt Sta
dium where they lost to Georgia in
the national championship game.
Iowa Stale revenged the Huskers
at the Big Eight tournament by elimi
nating them with a 16-3 major deci
sion.
Vosik was the only Husker named
to the All-Tournament team. But, first
baseman Bobby Benjamin, second
baseman Kevin Jordan and relief
pitcher Matranga were All-Big Eight
selections. Vosik and Shawn Buchanan
were named to the second team, while
Brian McAm was named honorable
mention.
Jordan also was named third team
All-American by Baseball America
Magazine.
McAm led the team in hilling this
season with a balling average of .354,
while Benjamin led the team in home
runs with 18, runs batted in with 73,
walks with 66 and a .652 slugging
percentage.
Matranga, a left-handed junior
reliever, led the team with an ERA of
2.16.
Nebraska loses only two seniors
this year in pitcher Dale Kistailis, 1
0, and third baseman Kevin French,
who hit .328 this season.
NU tennis player
comes up short
At the NCA A men’s tennis cham
pionships May 18 to 27 in Palm Springs,
Calif., Nebraska sophomore Matthias
Mueller lost to the eventual singles
runner-up. In addition, Mueller, in
teaming with senior Ken Feuer, lost
to the eventual doubles champions.
Mueller was beat in singles com
petition by UCLA’s Jason Netter, 4
6, 6-2, 6-3. In doubles competition,
Mueller and Feuer were ousted by
California’s Doug Eisenman and Matt
Luccna, 6-2,6-4.

student-athlete award

Nebraska sophomore Joanne
Brooks was named this year’s recipi
ent of the Edith Munson Award, which
recognizes the nation’s top student
athlctc golfer, by the National Goll
Coaches Association.
Brooks, who was one of 10 indi
viduals selected to participate in the
NCAA golf championships May 23
26 at the Arthur Hills Course in Hil
ton Head Island, S.C., also earned
first-team NGCA Wilson All-Aca
demic and Wilson honorable men
tion All-America honors.
Teammate Ann Guibcrson, a jun
ior, earned her second consecutive
Coaches All-Academic award after
being the first Nebraska golfer to cam
the honor last year.
“It just shows that, by combining
the two... you can be an athlete and
a student and be successful in both,”
said Robin Scherer, Comhuskcr
women’s golf coach.
At the NCAA Championships,
Brooks, the Huskcrs’ first women’s
golfer to play in the national champi
onship toumamcnl since 1982, hn
ished 47th with a score of 314.
“She shot 75 the first day and was
11th, but from there she had a little
trouble,” Scherer said. Brooks fol
lowed with rounds of 81,79 and 79.
“It was a good experience for her,”
the third-year coach said. “She proha
bly didn’t play up to her potential but
she played well.
“When you play in a tournament
of that level you have to have a great
tournament to win. She just didn’t
play steady golf. She played average
that week.”
Scherer said Brooks’ success this
year docs not raise her expectations
of the Tauranga, New Zealand native
and two-Umc All-Big Eight performer
come next season.
“I already expected her to be one
of the lop players in the country,” she
said.
Bui with Brooks and Guibcrson
both finishing the season ranked among
the nation’s lop 85 golfers and relum
ing, Scherer said, Nebraska will have
a “really good team next year.”
“We’ll definitely be bcticr next
year,” she said. “I’m really excited.”
