Educational administration at UNL ranks in top 25 list of nation’s programs tty rviark <»eorgen Staff Reporter The Department of Educational Administration in the University of Ncbraska-Lincoln Teachers College has been ranked in the top 25 educational programs in the nation. The rankings, produced by the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, listed educational administration departments nation wide. It’s nice to know that some one outside your department likes what you’re doing,” said Ron Jockcl, department chairman. Jockcl said no other colleges from the Big Eight Conference were listed in the poll. The rank ings did include Big Ten schools and independent schools, such as Notre Dame and Penn Stale. Rank ings were determined from a na tionwide sampling survey of schol ars in varying academic areas. “The ranking was nothing we applied for or sent in a bunch of recommendations for,” Jockcl said. But the department must con tinue to move forward, he said. “We can’t rest on our laurels. We’re not perfect. We have many things underway right now. We must be doing something right,” Jockcl said. Jockcl also said he is proud of the ranking and that it is an honor for the department and for UNL. Stafford Continued from Page 1 Robert Clark, director of student accounts, said he has talked to some of the 1,100 students with Stafford loans for the summer who wanted to know how they could pay for their classes. Students could take out short term loans through financial aid or borrow from friends, family or banks, he said. Clark said there are “too many summer sessions, too many students and not enough time,” to process deferments of payment. The federal government has made so many changes in policy, Clark said, that he had to rely on the finan cial aid office to keep track of all the changes rather than know them all himself. Beacon said he has “yet to see them (financial aid regulations) be come more lenient.” “This is a federal requirement linked to the problems of high dc fault,” he said. The financial aid office must comply with federal regulations, al though the default rate at UNL is a low 3.3 percent, he said. Beacon said the Office of Scholar ships and Financial Aid asked the Department of Education if the sum mer sessions could be considered as one session with four mini sessions. “That would have made it eas ier,” he said. But the current system is the best solution possible, he said, because the office has tried to make it easier for students and itself. UNL could solve the problem by holding just two summer sessions, he said, providing that this year’s regu lations remain the same for next summer. The university could establish a five-week summer session followed immediately by an eight-week ses sion, he said. That would both pre serve the popular five-week session and allow students 13 weeks of class, he said. Gosch said “some things need to be done different next summer,” but doubled that the UNL would limit the number of summer sessions to two. —.. 11 ' ... ■■-■■■■■■ 1 ■ . ■ ■ Library Continued from Page 3 log hasn’t been installed yet, Cook said, some students have been con fused by what is and what isn’t in the computers. If students can’t find what they’re looking for in the computerized sys tem, the standard card catalog files still arc available for use in all library branches, Cook said. About 50 terminals, spread through out the 12 branches of the library, already have been hooked up to the system for public use, she said, and additional terminals will be added in Ihc future. An on-line suggestion box invites comments and suggestions from us ers about the automated system. Overall, she said, the comments have been positive. Cook said planning for the compu terized card catalog system began in 1986, with funding provided by the Nebraska Legislature. The circulation system at Love Library has been fully automated for 11 years, she said, but the first public computer terminals were placed in the library April 1. Bush Continued from Page 1 exchanges by 1 .(XX) from each coun try would promote understanding between the countries, Bush said. While in Omaha, Bush also awarded Mad Dads with the nation’s 126th Daily Point of Light in his “I(XX) Points of Light” program. The crowd of about 2,5(X) people included one child who wore a shirt stating, ‘‘My body is a drug free /one.” Some of the ticket holders to the open-air speech were turned away when officials decided to limit the number of people in the immediate area. Residents gathered outside of the speech area to catch a glimpse of the president. Speaking in front of a sign that read, “Mad Dads and law enforce ment together: taking back the streets,” Bush said Mad Dads had done “radi cal surgery” on what community leaders have called a “cancer fester ing in the heart of North Omaha.” John Foster, an area resident, founded Mad Dads after his son Scan was beaten by gang members in May 1989. Now the group numbers more than 550, Bush said.
